British Triathlon is pleased to announce that entries are now open for the 2010 British Elite Duathlon Championships to be held at Prestwold Airfield, Loughborough on 28th March. The event, won by Alistair Brownlee in the men’s and Sophie Coleman in the women’s junior race last year, has a prize pot of £5000.

2010 is set to be a huge year for Duathon, with the Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships set to take place in Holyrood Park from 3rd - 5th September 2010. The event in Loughborough is the second major duathlon event of the season following on quickly from the Age Group British Duathlon Championships to be held at Clumber Park earlier in March.

The Elite Duathlon in Loughborough last year saw several athletes take part and go on to be crowned World Champions later in the year. This year’s event is likely to see fierce racing, with not only British Championship titles at stake, but also a £5000 prize fund on offer and an opportunity for athletes to put themselves in line for selection for the elite teams at the ITU World and ETU European Duathlon Championships in 2010. The selection policies for these events can be found at www.britishtriathlon.org

The seniors and juniors will race together over a 5km run, 20km bike and finishing with 2.5km run, with athletes from both categories eligible to win the prize money. Youths will race over 2.5k run, 10km bike and 1.25km run. The event will also see the inaugural British Paraduathlon Championships, which will be contested over 5km run, 20km bike and 2.5km run.

National Paratriathlon Programme Manager Jonathon Riall commented on the inclusion of Paraduathlon in the British Elite Duathlon Championships: “It is a great step forward for disabled athletes within the UK that British Triathlon now offers a wider range of multi sport events to take part in, and we hope this will help increase the overall participation in the sport. It is especially exciting that we are able to offer this opportunity in the year that Edinburgh includes a Paraduathlon wave within the 2010 Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships.”

The event is being organised by Just Racing UK on behalf of British Triathlon, entry details can be found at www.justracinguk.com

The Season starts with a Winter Warmer

A small but dedicated GB Age Group Team travel to Lygna in Norway this weekend as they compete at the 2010 Lygna ETU Winter Triathlon European Championships.

Fresh snow and a temperature of minus three degrees will welcome our team of three Age Group athletes in Lygna, near Oslo. Temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 15 degrees, earlier this week.

The event involves a 4km run, 7.5km mountain bike, and 6km cross-country ski, although the nature of Winter Triathlon means final distances will be set on the day taking account of the snow conditions.

Our team of three Age Group athletes includes Stephen Gray, Tom Phillips and British Triathlon’s very own President Dr Sarah Springman OBE.

Dr Sarah Springman OBE commented: “The 2010 Lygna ETU Winter Triathlon European Championships provides a unique opportunity for athletes to take part in one of triathlon’s more extreme multisport events.
North West Junior Series Provisional Results 2009

NW Junior Series Provisional Results 2009
The method used is that the winner of a race has a score of 100% and other competitors score a percentage of the winner’s time. The percentages for each race are added to give an overall series score.

Winter Series
The spreadsheet NW Junior Winter Series 2009 details the full scores competitors. The stated criteria for the series was that each competitor must complete the duathlon and that their 3 best results from the remaining races would count. In addition, competitors must have signed up as Triathlon England members for the 2008/09 season. Using these criteria the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category have been determined. (N. B. Someone who may well have scored maximum points in each aquathon, but did not compete in the duathlon would not have filled the criteria and despite having a higher score, would not be eligible for series recognition.) In T3 Girls and Youth boys there were only 2 competitors who did the duathlon and 3 other races so the third place went to athletes who did the duathlon and two other races.

TE membership has been checked with the central database at Loughborough.
Summer Series
The criteria for this series was the best five results from the published races. The full results are detailed in the spreadsheet NW Junior Summer Series 2009 In addition, competitors must have been signed up as Triathlon England members for the 2009/2010 season. Some places have gone to competitors who only did 4 or only did 3 races in which case they have been given a score of zero for the remaining race or races that they did not do.

TE membership has been checked with the central database at Loughborough.
Welsh Triathlon AGM 2010 Nominations for the Board

Vice Chairman: Steve Butler

My name is Stephen Butler I am forty-nine years of age and I am very passionate towards Triathlon and its development in Wales. I have been involved with Triathlon for approximately sixteen years. The majority of this as a competitor but due to a recurring back injury the past six years has been spent as a Committee member & Coach with Pencoed Tri Club.

I have been part of the Welsh Triathlon executive committee for the past three years with the last year covering the Vice-Chairman's role due to the Vice chairman standing down.

My roles on the committee apart from the general Vice-Chairman's duties have included the following.

• A member on the British triathlon age group sub committee, which has involved introducing the new age group qualification criteria for World and European championship races. The qualification process is now more performance based. This has improved the quality of athletes representing GB and has been very well excepted by the age group athletes.
• I have also revamped the criteria for event organisers in Wales wishing to hold either a National Champs or Grand Prix series race. To host a Welsh championship event you now have to place a comprehensive bid with all relevant documentation to be considered. (Criteria to be found on WT website)This will help raise the standard of events in Wales and hopefully attract more participants and a higher standard of competition.
• I have also helped in the reorganisation of the Welsh academy with Richard Brady. The Welsh academy is now functioning very well and have a very strong group of athletes with huge potential.

If re elected to carry out the Vice-Chairman position, I feel my past experiences with sport and Triathlon will enable me to continue to develop in this role and help create a solid working relationship within the association and its associated clubs and members.

Executive Officer: Richard Jones

My vision and ambition for Welsh Triathlon is to develop a performance level pathway that is effective and sustainable. This will provide Welsh athletes with the realism of competing at championship level at all distances. This can only be supported with the development of home grown coaches. Coach development is imperative to the long term success of Welsh athletes.
During my time racing pro at Olympic distance and then long course, winning numerous titles at the elite level, I gained an abundance of experience and knowledge of the sport.
Since then, the past five years have been devoted to developing and strengthening my coaching skills. I have coached a number of athletes to European and World championship podiums, age group and elite IM winners and World Ironman championships.
Having competed and coached at a high level, I believe that I have a full understanding of the requirements of performance that will enable Welsh Triathlon to move towards a greater depth at championship level.
My intention is to share my knowledge and coaching techniques in developing all coaches involved with Welsh Triathlon.
I consider myself fitting for the role as Performance Director as my background, current coaching status and future vision for Welsh Triathlon all highlighted above demonstrate that I fully understand the requirements and skills to develop performance in Wales.

Executive Officer: Rosemarie Jones

I have been involved in the sport of triathlon for approx 18 years when I participated in my first sprint distance triathlon. I have enjoyed the sport at all levels and have competed at all distances including Ironman. I have also twice represented GB in age group races.

Along with my Husband we formed Celtic Tri triathlon club in October 2005 and I worked on the committee within the club in the role of development officer. I am still actively involved in organising club events including a yearly duathlon and aquathlon training series. I have on two occasions organised the Aberavon Beach Aquathlon which was awarded Welsh Championship status.

I now feel that I would like to use all my experience and enthusiasm in supporting and helping Welsh Triathlon and would like to apply for a position on the Welsh Triathlon Executive Board

Executive Officer: Jayne Arnold

I have been involved in the sport of triathlon since 2003 when I participated in my first sprint distance event, ever since then I have been completely hooked on the sport and have completed numerous triathlons from sprint distance to Ironman.

I assisted in the creation of Celtic Tri triathlon club and undertook the position of treasurer for 2 years. I also assisted with the first club Aquathlon including receiving and processing application forms, on the day registration and timing for the event. I am extremely passionate about the sport of triathlon and I'm always keen to encourage others to participant irrespective of their ability.

I would like to take up a position on the Welsh Triathlon Executive Committee to enable me to give something back to a sport that has given me a great sense of pride and achievement over the last seven years.

British Triathlon Support International Coaching

British Triathlon has welcomed nine international delegates onto a British Triathlon Level 2 Coaching Course last week at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough.

The British Triathlon Level 2 course supported by UK Sport international funding had a truly global flavour with candidates arriving from Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, St Kitts & Nevis, Malta, South Africa and Slovenia.

Delegates received expert tuition from the Workforce Development team and British Triathlon Coach Education tutors, developing an understanding of safe, ethical, and effective triathlon coaching.

This is not the first time international coaches have attended a British Triathlon coaching course, with a number of coaches obtaining British Triathlon Coaching Qualifications through the ITU Scholarship Coaching Programme. British Triathlon’s Coaching Qualifications are part of the UK Coaching Certificate Scheme and accredited by the International Triathlon Union.

British Triathlon’s President, Dr Sarah Springman OBE commented: “British Triathlon is incredibly proud of its coaching programme. To host the first all international delegate British Triathlon Level 2 Coaching Course was a fantastic opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with our international colleagues. Through our qualified Coach Education tutors, we hope to have enabled the delegates with the skills and abilities to plan, deliver and evaluate triathlon sessions and facilitated the promotion and growth of the sport within their home country. We also learnt a great deal from them about coaching in their countries.”

Emma Swanwick from South Africa commented:”I really enjoyed the course; the interaction with the tutors has been good bringing some new ideas into the activities we need to look at within our home nations. The staff at British Triathlon have been really helpful and we have made some nice links. We will take away some good experiences and information that we can start imparting to some of our coaches back in South Africa”.

Isabelle Zarb from Malta added: “I found the course very interesting and very informative; I come from a swimming background and although I was a triathlete myself, have never coached triathlon. The course has helped put the three disciplines together, and build the rapport with the coaches to establish the networks [needed for the future].

Shastri Sankar from Trinidad and Tobago also found the course enlightening adding: “It has given me a broader view of triathlon and greater interest in the sport. The information was extremely helpful on how to deal with athletes from all walks of life from beginner to senior. The course was simple and to the point, with excellent tutors”.
