British Cross Triathlon Championships

The inaugural British Cross Triathlon Championships took place on the hills above St. Mary’s Loch in the beautiful Scottish Borders on Saturday 31 July 2010.

The event which won triathlonscotland’s Event of the Year in 2008 was hosted by the Durty Triathlon, and attracted a high-quality field from across the UK.

Chris Stuart of the Army led the competitors out of the water by around 30 seconds, with Nicola Duggan emerging first in the women’s race.

The two athletes lead, didn’t last for long, with the rest of the field taking the bit between their teeth on the two lap bike course.  The hilly and technical course meant both leaders were caught. In the men’s race, Sam Gardner and Ian Leitch established a gap of several minutes, with Stuart gradually moving down the field, eventually finishing in seventh place.

In the women’s race, Nicola Duggan was caught by Ailees Anderson, Darrelle Parker and Kerry MacPhee but refused to let them take control. Duggan fought hard and stayed with the three athletes, and then found the extra burst she needed on the run.

Duggan re-took the lead, and ran away from her challenges establishing a lead of over seven minutes finishing with  a time of 2:26.30.

In the men’s race, it became clear it was a two horse race with Gardner and Leitch pushing on and extending their lead. Leitch’s superior descending skills allowed him to open a ten-metre gap and run to victory recording a time of 1:59.17 – a course record by 20 minutes.
