Welsh Sprint Duathlon Champions crowned at Harlech Castle

Published:

Harlech Castle was the dramatic setting which played host to the finish of the 2017 Welsh Sprint Duathlon Championships on Sunday 9th April.

A field of just under 100 took part in the duathlon, among a combined field of more than 500 involved in triathlon, aquathlon and fun run events throughout the day. The duathlon saw a first run of 5km, with a section on the beach, before a testing 21km bike course and a final run culminating in a final climb to the unique finish line in the castle keep itself.

In a close race at the front of the Men’s event it was David Cole (West Coast Triathlon) who established a lead on the bike and held that advantage on the second run to win in 1:03:15. Simon Cole from GOG Triathlon recorded the fastest run splits of the day to finish second in 1:04:12, while Phillip Maddocks (Loughborough Students Tri) was a close third in 1:04:28.

In the women’s race Louise Kelly (C.O.L.T) was the first duathlon finisher after taking out a gun to tape win in an impressive 1:14:06. Vicky Jones was second in 1:24:36 (Y Fenni Triathlon Club) and Gina Willis (Brereton Wheelers) was third in 1:26:46 with both establishing a gap on the rest of the field during the bike stage.
