FAQs

Clubs

We are a single discipline club and have 300 running club members but only 20 who do triathlon. How much do we have to pay?

You should declare your club members that participate in triathlon or multisport activities within your club. This number will determine which pricing category you fall into under the Single Discipline type club.

How long does it take to get through the affiliation process?

The affiliation form should take only a few minutes to complete, provided that you have got all of the information together before you start.

After you submit, we will review the form within a few working days. If everything is in place, we will be able to approve the form and enable you to make payment and complete the process. If we need additional information from you, this will depend upon how quickly we can get everything resolved with you.

We are a community club that have a sponsor(s). Do we affiliate as a commercial or community club?

There is no problem with a Community Club having a sponsor(s) so long as:

  • The sponsors name is not in the title of the club
  • That all funding from the sponsorship deal goes back into the club to benefit its members.
  • That the club has all the other traits outlined in the description of a community club.

If the sponsors title is in the club’s name it will be deemed as a race team and therefore a commercial club.

What safeguarding qualifications do we need to have in our club?

All coaches and activators within your club must have an appropriate and up-to-date safeguarding qualification.

Anyone coaching juniors (U18) must attend the UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop.

Those working exclusively with adults can either attend the same workshop or choose to attend the Adults at Risk training provided by the Ann Craft Trust.

In either case, training must have been attended within the past three years and certificates must have been uploaded to the coach’s membership profile on the British Triathlon website.

Upcoming courses can be searched and booked on our website.

We need to get a DBS check, what do we do?

We now have an online process in place for DBS checks. Full information on the system and how to start this process can be found here - https://www.britishtriathlon.org/about-us/safeguarding/dbs

If you have any queries relating directly to DBS checks or certificates, please contact dbs@britishtriathlon.org

Who needs a DBS check?

British Triathlon requires an Enhanced DBS to be completed by anyone over the age of 16 who;

  • coaches, trains, instructs, supervises, cares or provides advice and guidance relating to physical or emotional well-being e.g. as a Club Welfare Officer;
  • to children (under 18s)
  • or ‘adults at risk’, who are in receipt of a form of health or social care service or assistance because of their age, illness or disability;
  • and does this at least once a month.

British Triathlon requires an Enhanced DBS check with check against the barred list to be completed by anyone over the age of 16 who

  • coaches, trains, instructs, supervises, cares or provides advice and guidance relating to physical or emotional well-being e.g. as a Club Welfare Officer;
  • to children (under 18s)
  • or ‘adults at risk’, who are in receipt of a form of health or social care service or assistance because of their age, illness or disability;
  • once a week or four or more times within 30 days;
  • and is unsupervised (supervision is defined as being within sight and hearing of someone in Regulated Activity at all times who has an enhanced with check against the barred list DBS check).

Do single discipline coaches still have to have a DBS and safeguarding qualification?

Yes, single discipline coaches operating in clubs affiliated to British Triathlon must comply with the same safeguarding standards as triathlon coaches. The standards can be found here.

What insurance cover do we get through club affiliation?

Affiliated clubs receive insurance cover for all club activities, including events. The level of cover is shown below

  • Public Liability = £15,000,000
  • Employers’ Liability = £10,000,000
  • Professional Indemnity = £10,000,000
  • Directors and Officers Cover = £10,000,000

The club insurance cover does not provide any public liability or personal accident cover for individual members or coaches. Members and coaches require their own individual membership of British Triathlon in order to benefit from this insurance cover. Details of individual membership can be found on our website.

Do commercial clubs still get the same insurance benefits?

All club types receive the same level of benefits including £15m Public Liability insurance.

How do we know what type of club we are?

For information about what defines each club type please go to our Club Type pages.

If you are still unsure about what club type you fit into, your Regional Manager can work with you to identify this, their contact details can be found here.
