Most people would probably assume that a person’s sexual orientation is a private matter and has no bearing on their ability to take part in Triathlon. Whilst that certainly should be the case, it isn’t always the perception of lesbian, gay or bisexual people.

Clubs can unintentionally make certain members feel excluded because they don’t fit the traditional stereotypes.  For example, the wording on invitations, dress codes and seating plans are often based on the assumption that people will attend a club function as a male and female couple. 

Joint or Family Membership categories should cater for all types of couple or family, including same sex couples, civil partnership, gay marriage, as well as one-parent families and step-parents. 

Making quite minor adjustments can make a big difference and ensure that everyone feels welcome.
