Region’s junior athletes supported by IRC Qualification Assessment Event

Published:

Each year, British Triathlon host the Inter-Regional Championships (IRC) that bring together TriStar 2 and TriStar 3 athletes from across the country for individual and relay racing.

Instead of the usual series of qualification races, the East Region Junior Committee are organising a qualification assessment event on Sunday 13 June for the late-summer championships in Leicestershire.

The assessment will complete a swim time trial which will provide the order in which they start the bike and run to the finish. The bike and run will start from T1 and see the athletes race to the line.

The distances for the day will be:

TriStar 2: 200m swim; 1.5km bike and 1.2km run

TriStar 3: 300m swim; 2.5km bike and 1.2km run

The top four girls and boys in each age group will be selected for the team to represent the East region at the IRC later in the year.

This is a competitive racing opportunity for athletes aged 11-14 (age at 31 December 2021) to qualify to race against the top athletes in the two age groups from across Britain, therefore attendees to the qualification assessment event should have competitive race experience.

Taking place at Ipswich High School, home to Tri East, the regions development squads on Sunday 13 June from 8:30am.

Craig Dyce, responsible for the East Region’s IRC Team, said: “The Inter Regional Championships are a once yearly event and are an opportunity for some of the best girls and boys across both the TriStar 2 and 3 age groups in each of the 10 English Regions, Scotland, Wales and Jersey to race against each other.

“For aspiring young triathletes it is a wonderful opportunity to experience a big race environment and learn a number of new elements such as drafting and open water swimming, that will help them on their triathlon journey.

“We are proud in the East Region to fully support our team each year and the children have opportunities to train together in the lead up to the event and build a great team spirit.”
