With the 2020 Triathlon England Awards open for nominations, we got in touch with our 2019 winners to hear what it meant to them to be nominated and win.
“When I heard about the nomination I was really humbled,” said Bezuidenhout. “Our GO TRI South Shields events are a huge team effort and to be nominated for this award was greatly received within the whole club (South Shields Triathlon Club).
“GO TRI events are an amazing opportunity for anyone to give multisport a try and, without the volunteers who run them, these opportunities wouldn’t be possible.
“Our volunteers are crucial to our events; they cheer and motivate our participants before, during and after the race, and help make the overall event experience what it is.
“Recognising volunteers, the time, effort and energy they put in, is really important because of the hard work and dedication they put in to help events and the sport run. The Triathlon England Awards are a great way of doing this.
“This year, volunteers have been working hard to find new ways of helping and encouraging people to train and get involved. Motivating them to take part, boosting morale and all whilst doing the same themselves and dealing with what’s going on.
“For this reason I think that it’s so important that we celebrate everything that volunteers have been doing throughout lockdown. It’s changed how we live, train and race, yet volunteers have continued.”
The 2020 Triathlon England Awards are now open for nomination and will close on Wednesday 2 September at 12 noon.
There are seven categories to nominate someone in: Club of the Year; Coach of the Year; Key Worker of the Year; Multisport Event of the Year; Volunteer of the Year; Virtual Activity of the Year; and Virtual Coach of the Year.
