Over 1,000 triathletes participate at the Southport Triathlon

The second of the 2019 Triathlon England Championships, took place on Sunday 19 May at the Southport Triathlon.

Waterside Lodge played host to the triathlon which attracted over 1,000 triathletes of all abilities from novices to elite competitors over sprint and standard distances respectively.

The Southport Triathlon not only gave triathletes the opportunity to become a Triathlon England national champion, but also represented a chance for athletes to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group team at the 2020 Tartu ETU Standard Distance Triathlon European Championships.

Triathlon England Home Nation members racing for the national title competed over the over the 1.5km (run), 40km (bike), 10km (run) standard distance triathlon format. Additionally the country's top university students battled it out with the event also including the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Standard Distance Championships.

Event Overview

Claire Williams (35-39) crossed the finishing line as the quickest female finisher in a time of 2:16:25, over a minute quicker than Alice Beckett (25-29) who came home in 2:17:41. In a close battle right to the very end, Alice pipped Anita Howe (50-54) to second place by just over 15 seconds. The top five female finishers was rounded out by Lynsey Elliott (40-44) 2:18:51 and Fiona Blagg (30-34) 2:19:55.

In the men’s race, William Draper (under 20) completed the triathlon in a staggering time of 1:56:37, five minutes ahead of second-placed man Ian Aguilar (30-34) who finished in 2:01:45. Ian Johnson (40-44) came home in third with a time of 2:02:05, 30 seconds ahead of fourth-placed man Pawel Traczyk.

Leon Chevalier, competing in the BUCS Standard Triathlon Championships for University of Bath, took gold with a time of 1:51:23 with Erica Byram winning the female race in 2:06:59 and taking BUCS gold.
