Qualification

IMPORTANT NOTE

Athletes who moved their Q from 2021 to 2022 due to travel restrictions at the time they were offered a place on the 2021 team can register for their 2022 Q starting from the 1st October 2021 until 5pm Friday the 5th November 2021.

After this, general registration will open for athletes to register with a race result. There will be less than 20 places available per age group and the exact details will be added below. We thank everyone for their patience whilst we sort out the final details of this process.

To qualify for this event, athletes must supply a race result which meets the qualifying criteria and qualification evidence specified below.

Qualification evidence - Athletes will be required to submit performances providing the following information:

  • Race name
  • Race date
  • Athlete finish time
  • Winner of age-groups finish time
  • Working link to online results

Registration cut off dates:

Q1-5pm Friday 10th December 2021

Q2-5pm Friday 28th January 2022

Q3- 5pm Friday 3rd June 2022

Q4 - 5pm Friday 1st July 2022

Specific Race criteria:

  • The race result used must have been from a chip timed event
  • Results must be in 5 age group bands.
  • Events need to have the minimum distances of 1500m open water swim and 40km bike on tarmac to be eligible for qualification.
  • Athletes may submit a standard aquabike result or a DNF or full result from a standard distance triathlon result in which chip timing shows evidence of swim and bike times and follows the qualifying criteria. Only use the swim, T1 and bike sections and add the times together, do the same for the winner of your age group.
  • Results need to be within 115% of the winner of your age group. If you move up an age group, use the time from the winner of the age group you are moving into.
  • If the result which an athlete wishes to register with is from an aquabike race with more than 50 finishers in the results including DNS, DNF and DSQ the time of the winner of the age group from the aquabike race must be used.
  • If the result which an athlete wishes to register with is from an aquabike race with less than 50 finishers in the results including DNS, DNF and DSQ, the winner of the age group from the triathlon running alongside the aquabike race must be used as the winners time.
  • To work out your % of time behind the winner of your age group you could use a Time Percentage Calculator like the one found here.
  • Results must be valid between the following dates; January 2019 to the final registration cut off date.
  • If more than one competitor has a result of 100%, the most competitive result will be selected by the team manager. This may be the fastest time or the race with the most competitors in the affected age group depending on the race result used. The Team Managers decision is final.

Time frame results can be used from and will be considered by:

  • All results must meet the criteria above.
  • Results must be valid between the following dates; January 2019 to the final registration cut off date.
  • Athletes who have registered and who have used an aquabike race result which took place from January 2020 onward will be considered from Q1 onwards. (Even if the aquabike result had less than 50 competitor in the results)
  • Athletes who have registered and who have used a triathlon race result which took place from January 2020 onward will be considered from Q2 onwards.
  • Athletes who have registered and who have used either an aquabike or triathlon race result which took place from January 2019 until present day will be considered at Q3.
  • Registrations can be edited by going to your BTF account, then dashboard, then Age Group Listing and clicking Edit. If Edit is not there you are not able to edit the registration.

Why does it matter that pools are open again for results to be competitive?

6 weeks after indoor swimming pools were given the go-ahead to re-open, British Triathlon will deem events "competitive" again. This is so athletes have a return to racing period. Many athletes have not had access to training water, have been working extra hours or, have had significant changes to their usual routines and lives. Therefore there will be a 6 week period where racing is not competitive and results will not be viable to be used to qualify for Age Group Championships so all athletes can get used to competing again and return to fitness.

When did pools re-open after lockdown?

  • Indoor swimming pools in England re-opened on the 25th July 2020, therefore the first date which races are deemed to be competitive is the 5th September 2020.
  • Indoor swimming pools in Wales are due to reopen on the 10th August 2020, therefore the first date which races are deemed to be competitive is the 21st September 2020.
  • Indoor swimming pools in Scotland re-opened on the 1st September 2020, therefore the first date which races are deemed to be competitive is the 13th October 2020.

The £10 registration fees go towards administrating the age group teams. This provides 1 full time member of staff, administrative items, office space and covering bank fees for the team.

Pre-Qualification

This race is new in the World Triathlon calendar and so there will not be any Pre-Qualified athletes (PQ) for the 2021 race.

To Pre-Qualify for the 2022 World Triathlon World Championship race, athletes must finish in the top 15 places in their age group and be one of the first three British athletes to finish in the 2021 World Triathlon World Championship race.

Please see the link to the BTF Age Group Pre-Qualification policy here.

Allocation of Places

  • There are 20 places available in each age group. As many as all 20 places can be awarded during the first selection phase if sufficient numbers apply and meet the qualification criteria. The remaining selection phases will allocate any remaining places. This means that at the first registration cut off date, all the places may be allocated in each age group.
  • If more than 20 athletes qualify in an age-group, then after places are allocated as per results from within 12 months, the remaining athletes will be given a rolldown percentage, where relevant, based on the performance result they submitted at the time of registration and may be eligible for a rolldown place.
  • Allocation of places will be awarded following the 3 registration deadlines outlined in the section above. We endeavor to complete this process and notify athletes within 2 weeks of the deadline. Qualified athletes will be notified by e-mail and will also be marked with a 'Q' next to their name in the registered athletes list below. If you use a Hotmail, outlook or work email address please check your junkmail, we find these email addresses often send our emails to the junkmail inbox.
  • If you believe you have qualified and your name does not have a Q next to it on the registration list and you have not received an email informing you of your selection within two weeks of the final qualification deadline, please contact the Team Manager to determine why.  Once rolldown places have been offered we cannot guarantee that places will be available for athletes that did not make us aware of their Q not showing prior to this.
