Pre-Qualification Policy

World Triathlon World Championship Pre-Qualification Policy

The same criteria apply for all World Triathlon World Championship events and distances.

Athletes will be eligible for pre-qualification to a World Triathlon World Championship event if they have met one of the following criteria:

  • Finish in the top 15 athletes in their Age-Group and be one of the first 3 Great Britain athletes in their Age-Group at the equivalent Championships the year before the World Triathlon World Championship event.
  • (This includes athletes moving up an Age-Group. PQ places are not rolled down if an athlete who does PQ moves up an age group.)
  • Be the previous years British Champion at the equivalent event and distance.

  • To accept the Pre-Qualified (PQ) place athletes must register to take up their pre-qualification place by 5pm on the PQ deadline provided in the PQ section of the event webpage and provided in the confirmation email. If registration is closed it will be re-opened.
  • Failure to register by the deadline will result in the PQ place not being awarded.
  • Pre-qualification places cannot be transferred to different events, distances or years.
  • It is an athletes responsibility to check the Age-Group event registration list on the event webpage to confirm that they have a ‘PQ’ next to their name by 5pm on the final registration deadline. If it is not showing they must email the event Team Manager.
  • Once the first roll down places have been awarded, normally two weeks after the final registration deadline, it is no longer possible to award pre-qualification places.
  • Placing in a European Championship will not give pre-qualification for a World Championship.Placing in a World Championship will not give pre-qualification for a European Championship.

Why have some athletes Pre-Qualified for the World Standard Triathlon, Standard Aquabike or Super Sprint Triathlon Championships?

Due to the 2022 World Triathlon Standard Triathlon, Standard Aquabike and Super Sprint Triathlon World Championships taking place in Abu Dhabi in the UEA, the decision was made to offer qualified athletes in the 2022 World Standard Triathlon Team, the Super Sprint Team and the Standard Distance Aquabike Team, the chance to move their place to the 2023 equivalent race due to the human rights record of the UAE. This option was open to athletes across all 3 teams and athletes needed to contact the Age Group team at British Triathlon before the 5th November 2021. Athletes offered rolldown places after the 5th November 2021 are not offered the option to roll their places to 2023 due to the complexity of qualifying for 2023 as agreed by the Age Group Committee. This is the first time this option has been available and is not a guarantee of it happening in the future.
