Michael Salisbury

In the short time since competing in his first race in September 2020, Michael Salisbury has become British champion, won at the British Triathlon Super Series Grand Final and represented Great Britain including at the World Triathlon Para Championships.

Michael, who was born with a congenital shortening of the left arm, was introduced to swim, bike, run by university friends after they started doing triathlons and encouraged Michael to get involved too.

After taking part in his first triathlon event over the middle distance in 2020, the geography teacher spent the winter training and saw a British Triathlon Virtual Talent ID session advertised. He attended the session and then raced at the British Triathlon Super Series race in Llanelli in May 2021.

That same year saw Michael crowned British PTS5 champion at the British Paratriathlon Championships in July, secure victory at the British Triathlon Super Series Grand Final and make his international debut at the World Triathlon Para Cup in Alhandra, Portugal, where he finished fifth.

Michael’s rise within the sport continued in 2022, despite an injury-disrupted start to the year.

In May 2022, Michael won his first international medal, adapting well to the change of format from triathlon to duathlon to claim silver at the Europe Para Triathlon Championships in Olsztyn, Poland.

He then went onto race at his first World Triathlon Para Series event in Montreal, finishing ninth, only a few weeks after having Covid.

Michael then successfully defended the British men’s PTS5 title at Eton Dorney before returning to international racing in August at Britain’s first standalone World Triathlon Para Series event in Swansea.

The event saw Michael return to the city where he studied geography at Swansea University and on his return he finished ninth in a competitive field.

A month later, Michael was back on the international podium, earning silver at World Triathlon Para Cup Alhandra, before ending the year by competing at his first World Triathlon Para Championships, finishing eighth in Abu Dhabi.
