In Rio, Melissa and Nicole had a fantastic swim and were in medal contention through the bike and on to the run. However, they were overtaken and dropped to fourth place before the the USA pairing ahead of them began to fade. Nicole encouraged Melissa to speed up and challenege for the medal in the final metres of the race. The American athlete, Elizabeth Baker, tripped and the British pairing were able to run across the line to claim the bronze medals.
