Course Information

Regional Triathlon Training Camp – February 2017

There will be a regional training camp for young triathletes at Culford School, near Bury St Edmunds, during February half term (from 12th February 2017).  We had a very successful Regional Camp there in 2016 and would like to repeat the event including the brand new Skills School initiative from Triathlon England.

There are two options:

1. A Six Day Residential Camp will run from the evening of Sunday 12th February until lunchtime on Saturday (18th) and is open to Juniors & Youths.

(TS3 by invitation please speak with Tim Williams or Emma Springham at the contact detail below to see if you are eligible to attend)

Academy athletes only  - For this Six Day Camp, the total cost is subsidised.

2. A Three Day Residential Camp will be Skills School based and will start Sunday 12th February and run until  Wednesday afternoon (15th) .  This camp is open to Juniors, Youths and Tristars 1,2 & 3  (*).

Objective:

The objective of the camp is to learn about training for triathlon so will include several training sessions each day.  Culford has excellent sports facilities, including a 25m swimming pool, indoor halls, extensive grounds and easy access to a network of quiet roads.

The cost of the camp is £440 (6 days - subsidised for Academy Athletes) and £225 (3 days) which  includes full board and accommodation. Accommodation is in shared rooms (2 or 3 to a room) and there are communal areas, kitchens, games rooms, etc, and a central dining room.

The camp is organized by Tim Williams, East Regional Academy Head Coach, and Emma Springham, Skill School Lead East and will be delivered by coaches from clubs across the region.

Q&A.

Q. How good at triathlon do I have to be?

A. There is no pre-camp trial or test of ability.  If you’re excited about training and racing triathlon and you’ve been doing it for a year or more you’re good enough.

Q. How much training will I have to do?

A.  We’ll set and adjust the programme according to who comes.  It’ll feel like a challenge and you’ll be tired by the time you go home.  But that’s triathlon isn’t it?

Q.  Do I have to come for the whole camp?

A.  We would rather everyone came to the start and stayed until the end.  The camp is not intended to be a drop-in camp. We have 2 lengths of stay 3 nights or 6 nights.

Q.  Are numbers limited?

A.  At the moment no, though there is a minimum number required to make the camp viable, and we cannot cater for an infinitely large number.   If the number who apply is too big for us to run a good camp we will have to limit on a first come first served basis.  If the camp is a success we’ll do it again.

Q. What sort of bike do I need?

A. Youths and Juniors will require a regular road bike suitable for training on the road in February.  Tristars may bring a cyclo-cross style bike suitable for riding off-road.

Q. Do I need a wetsuit?

A. No.  All of the swimming will be in an indoor pool.

Q.  Why is there is in an invitation only for TS3 on the six day camp?

A.  Six days is a long training camp.  A small number of TS3 athletes, those with a long training history, will be able to benefit from this camp.  T3 athletes who feel that they might fall into this category should discuss with their coaches, Tim or Emma.

Q.  Why is there an asterisk (*) next to Tristars on the three day camp?

A.  Please see the answer to question one.  If you have little no experience of triathlon or triathlon training this is probably not the place to start.

If you have any other questions please ask.
