London League 2019: Round 1 March Madness Duathlon

Published:

The start of the London League 2019 certainly lived up to its name, ‘March Madness’.

As we opened the London League this year we were treated to over dark skies and lots of wind including 50 mile an hour gusts. We had to make the tough decision after riding the course to drop the bike leg and cancel wave 2 due to safety concerns. The Duathlon quickly became a 5km and 9.8km race. 52 dedicated athletes braved the winds to run 5km and posted some very impressive times despite the weather. Three extremely strong athletes pushed on after the 5km to complete the 9.8km all finishing with a smile (or was it a grimace) on their faces. Congratulations to everyone who raced, it just shows how strong us duathletes are.

In the individual competitions, the overall winner in the Women's race was Anna Lawson (Serpentine) in 19:26, followed by Natalie Ruffell (Clapham Chasers) in second also under 20 minutes and Jennifer Hodkinson (7oaks Tri) in third.  In the Men's race, the winner was Austin Hall (Thames Turbo) in 17:11, with Thomas Marriage (Clapham Chasers) a close second, only three tenths of a second separating them. Zac Purnell (Crystal Palace) one of our youngest competitors came in third just a few second behind Thomas.

The 9.8km race was won by Andy Bourne (Roding Valley Tri) with Daniele Tomi (Serpentine) in second and Dan Welsh (JBR Run & Tri) finishing in third.
