London Region Paratriathlon Workshop Held on January 28th

Published:

All eyes were in Loughborough on the weekend of February 4th, with the kick-off of the Tri4Tokyo paratriathlon talent identification campaign. But just as important to the development of the sport was the grassroots clubs and coaches workshop held on January 28th at Lee Valley VeloPark.

The Triathlon England London region committee hosted its first paratriathlon specific workshop since 2011. According to London committee paratriathlon coordinator Donna DeWick, “the aim was to help our coaches and clubs to feel comfortable in welcoming paratriathletes to our training sessions and to our events, to create opportunities for participation throughout the year and at more than just a few key races.”

The day was focused on the practical, with sessions highlighting key considerations to create an inclusive training and racing environment. For example, in the visually impaired run session led by Chris Husbands, clubs were encouraged to think about arranging for people to meet visually impaired athletes at stations to ensure the athlete can safely get to a session. And in the chair racing session led by Gary Donald, ideas for hosting specific chair race training sessions for paratriathletes at the Velopark were discussed.

Clubs and coaches also brainstormed about what we can do to attract more paratriathletes to our training sessions and events. Simple ideas that could be put into immediate practice resonated with those in attendance, such as publishing information on club websites about the training sessions that could accommodate paratriathletes, and including course videos on event websites for athletes to see prior to signing up for an event to know if a course was suitable for a specific ability level or impairment.

The 2017 London League points series includes a “points for paras” category including double points awarded to athletes who participate in the Arctic One Tri and Para-Tri Festival on May 29th at Dorney Lake.

The 2017 UK wide events calendar will be announced soon by British Triathlon. You can find all paratriathlon news and announcements on the main BTF website HERE
