17 teams announced to battle for British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup Nottingham

Published:

Thirteen British triathlon quartets have been confirmed to line up on Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment on Saturday 2 September. The teams, made up of two men and two women, will also face competition from four international squads, including World Champions, Australia.

Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist, Jonathan Brownlee will join former ITU Triathlon World Champion, Non Stanford, 2017 ETU Triathlon European Champion, Jess Learmonth and Leeds training partner, Aaron Royle to form a strong Leeds I side.

They’ll face competition from a second Leeds contingent, featuring regular faces on the ITU World Triathlon Series circuit, Tom Bishop and Lucy Hall, Rio 2016 Olympian, Gordon Benson and 2017 ETU U23 Triathlon European Champion, Georgia Taylor-Brown.

Other British teams in the mix to be the first to lift the Cup include Loughborough I, with double Commonwealth Champion, Jodie Stimpson, 2016 ITU Junior Triathlon World bronze medallist, Ben Dijkstra, plus 2016 World University Triathlon Champion, Chris Perham and local hero, Sophie Coldwell.

Elsewhere, you can’t discount the Great Britain U23’s as medal contenders, after picking up mixed relay gold at the recent ETU U23 Triathlon European Championships.

Jonathan Brownlee, Team Leeds I, said: “It’s great to be part of Team Leeds and represent my home city at the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup.

“Mixed Relay is such an exciting aspect of triathlon and I’m looking forward to Nottingham getting behind the event on 2nd September”.

Nottingham residents will also be treated to performances from talented international sides, with Canada’s quartet containing Joanna Brown who recently finished fourth at World Triathlon Series Montreal. Australia will also head into the weekend with confidence, having scooped their recent accolade of ITU Triathlon Mixed Relay World Champions.

The event hopes to attract over 15,000 spectators, with many free-to-view spots alongside the Embankment to capture the very best of the action. For those wanting to sit back and relax, a big-screen will be showing all race coverage within the Meadows Recreation Ground Spectator Village, just metres away from the course. The spectator grandstand overlooking the finish line is now sold out.

With activities taking place from 9am, the event is truly a day for the whole family. Parklives have teamed up with the event to offer a Sports Zone jam-packed with activities for all to have a go at, whilst budding young triathletes can seek out how to become the next sporting star with British Triathlon’s Skills School and the Triathlon Trust. The Spectator Village will also be packed full with food and drink options, alongside a number of stalls to browse.

For those wanting to test out the course themselves, the City of Nottingham Triathlon will see hundreds of triathlon beginners taking the chance to compete across much of the same course as the elites. For more information and to book your spot on the start line, visit here.

Jack Buckner, British Triathlon CEO, said: “With 68 athletes set to line up, the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup Nottingham will be a showcase of the fantastic talent we have both in Great Britain and overseas.

“We are looking forward to the city of Nottingham really getting behind this brand-new event and engaging even more people in the sport on 2 September.”

Cllr Dave Trimble, Nottingham City Council Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “The excitement is really building now and the scene is set for this amazing inaugural event.

“The field is world-class and there are lots of opportunities for people to come and enjoy the event; as participants in the City of Nottingham Triathlon in the morning, watching the event along the course and dropping in to the sports village to try the activities on offer. I would urge everybody to come down on 2 September to enjoy this fantastic new event for the City.”
