In 2017 we celebrated success including a brilliant ITU World Triathlon Leeds, hearing that Mixed Triathlon Relays will be included at the Tokyo 2020 Games, paratriathletes dominating the European and world championships, and Age Groupers flying the British flag high around the world.

We also said farewell to some big personalities including CEO Jack Buckner moving on to British Swimming and popular coach and mentor, Malcolm Brown, retiring. Below is our review of 2017:

31 January: New Year's resolutions were achived as the 50th GO TRI event took place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

14 February: Lucy Hall won the first ITU World Cup of the season. She out sprinted Jess Learmonth in South Africa.

23 February: The new British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup was officially launched at Nottingham Castle. The Brownlee Brothers, Jodie Stimpson and Sophie Coldwell attended.

4 March: The 2017 World Triathlon Series started at #WTSAbuDhabi with a first ever podium finish for Tom Bishop, and a silver for Jodie Stimpson.

5 March: Rio Paratriathlon medal winners, Alison Patrick and Hazel McLeod won UCI World Track Cycling medals in LA.

22 April: Alistair Brownlee won his debut Middle Distance triathlon at Challenge Gran Carnaria. Emma Pallant also triumphed.

26 April: The £5M Brownlee Centre was officially opened in Leeds.

1 May: Alex Yee and Richard Horton won European duathlon titles & the British Age Group team excelled.

6 May: Alistair Brownlee won IRONMAN 70.3 St. George, USA in a new course record of 3:41:58. Holly Lawrence won the women's rae.

11 May: British Triathlon won a major award for it's approach to increasing female participation and raising the profile of women in triathlon.

13 May: The international paratriathlon season opened at the Series event in Yokohama with three gold medals for GB. Jonny Brownlee ran 1km with his bike following a bike crash in wet conditions.

28 May: Tim Don set the fastest ever time at an IRONMAN event with a stunning 7hrs 40:23 in Brazil.

9 June: The sport learned that Mixed Team Relays will be included in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The Brownlee Brothers found out from Non Stanford, apparently...

11 June: The Brownlee Brothers delighted home crowds at #WTSLeeds.

17 June: Kate Waugh and Jess Learmonth won European titles in Kitzbuhel. The Paratriathlon team also dominated their events and GB Age Group athletes won 26 medals.

11 July: Paratriathlon Head Coach, Jonathan Riall recieved a Lifetime Achievement Award from 220 Triathlon Magazine.

16 July: Dan Slater won European Youth Gold and Great Britain won the Mixed Relay event in Lithuania.

7 August: Georgia Taylor-Brown won the European U23 title as well as helping Great Britain to Mixed Relay gold.

21 August: Penticton, Canada, hosted the first ITU Multisport World Championships, covering duathlon, aquathlon and cross triathlon. Emma Pallant, Mark Buckingham and Jacqui Slack were amongst the elite medal winners, and there were a host of Age-Group medals.

26 August: Jonny Brownlee stuck gold at #WTSStockholm. Hist first win of the season.

28 August: Mallory Park hosted a brilliant weekend, including the South Central Region winning the Inter Regional Championships, and Barclay Izzard & Kate Waugh claiming the Junior Super Series titles. The British Paratriathlon Championships took place, sealing selections for the world championships and next year's Commonwealth Games.

2 September: Leeds won the first ever Accenture British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup, which was televised live by BBC.

6 September: Les McDonald, long term president of ITU, passed away. He is credited with driving the sport's inclusion in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

10 September: Emma Pallant and Tim Don hit the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship podiums in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. Joe Skipper won the ETU European Long Distance title in the Netherlands.

15 September: Andy Lewis overcame a summer bike crash and retained the PTS2 Paratriathlon world title in Rotterdam. Dave Ellis captured gold in the visually impaired event, guided by Carl Shaw.

16 September: Jess Learmonth won bronze in the ITU World Championship Grand Final race in Rotterdam, sealing a breakthrough season. Great Britain Age Group atheletes were at their best, topping the medal tally from Hyde Park four years ago. 

15 October: Lucy Charles and David McNamee both made the IRONMAN World Championships podium in Kona, Hawaii. Tim Don missed out following a serious crash with a truck in the days leading up to the race.

22 October: British Triathlon announced that there will be age-group drug testing at the Glasgow 2018 European Champs as part of a wider Clean Sport initiative.

11 November: Andy Salmon got started as the new British Triathlon CEO with a presentation at the AGM.

26 November: Eddie Brocklesby extended her record as the oldest British female Ironman finisher in Cozumel, aged 74.

29 November: Team England line up was confirmed for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games followed by Team Scotland the following day. The Welsh Team will be confirmed in January. Defending Champion, Alistair Brownlee (video link), will be a star attraction.

30 November: Malcolm Brown won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Coaching Awards. He summarised a few of his highlights, and provided insight for future coaches in this brilliant video.

15 December: Jack Maitland coached his final session at the Leeds Triathlon Centre. He was one of the original founders of the centre. 

19 December: The 2018 World Class Performance Squad was announced, including some new names in both the Olympic and Paralympic squads.
