British Age-Groupers ‘Sprint’ to record-breaking medal haul at ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championships

Surpassing even the Standard Distance Championship medal haul of 20, the British Age-Group Triathlon team collected an incredible 34 podium finishes – including eight Gold medals – at the Sprint Triathlon World Championships in Rotterdam on Sunday.

Racing over the draft-legal format, two of Britain’s reigning World Champions, Jacqui Phillips (50-54) and Barbara Holmes (55-59), matched their success in Cozumel, Mexico last year, while the third defending champion, Mike Smallwood (70-74), had to be content with Silver this time around – though it was another British athlete, Brian Tate, that pipped him for Gold this time around by just 32 seconds.

Multiple ITU Aquathlon Elite World Champion in years past, Richard Stannard, made his debut in the Age-Group ranks to take Gold in the 40-44 category with the fastest overall swim time of the day too.

After hosting much of the BBC TV commentary of the Elite races on Saturday and Sunday, BBC Breakfast presenter, Louise Minchin, once again represented the GB team in finishing 54^th in the 45-49 division, part of a team entry of over 350 racing over the Sprint distance in Rotterdam.
