Age-Group racing draws to a close for GB in Spain

Published:

Despite having only started late in the year, the final international events of the year for the Great Britain Age-Group Team will take place in the coming weeks.

Taking place over 30-31 October, El Anillo - Extremadura will host the World Triathlon Aquathlon Championships and Cross Championships where 67 British athletes will compete.

Located in the western region of Extremadura, El Anilo is situated on the Gabriel y Galan Reservoir which is where the 1km swim will take place for the aquathlon. Exiting the water and moving through transition, athletes will then take on two, 2.5km run laps to the finish.

The cross triathlon will be competed over the same swim before a single loop, 21.4km off road bike and 6km trail run over two laps.

The aquathletes  will race on Saturday 30 October, with Age-Group racing taking place in the late afternoon local time. Sunday 31 October will host the cross triathletes with Age-Group action across the afternoon.

The following weekend the 2021 Duathlon World Championships will take place in Aviles on Spain’s north coast.

Britain will be well represented, with 180 sprint and 114 standard distance duathletes entered for the respective championships on 6 and 7 November.

The Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre is the central venue for the event, with both runs in the sprint and standard distance races taking place along the banks of the Ria de Aviles to the south of the Niemeyer Centre, going up one side before crossing over and heading back down and crossing again at the Niemeyer Centre.

The bike will take the athletes north from transition along the river, with the standard distance course reaching the coast and turning around at the Peninsula de San Juan and the sprint distance turning further back along the river.

Once athletes have completed their run, bike, run, they will cross the finish line in the forecourt of the Niemeyer Centre.

International Age-Group racing provides British Triathlon Home Nation members with the opportunity to represent Great Britain at World Triathlon and Europe Triathlon Championships.

Members are able to qualify to represent the team through competing in qualification events for sprint and standard distance triathlon and duathlon, with teams for other distances and multisport disciplines able to be qualified for according to their qualification criteria.

The qualification races in 2022 which will provide places for teams racing in 2023 will be announced in November. To find out more about the Great Britain Age-Group, visit the Age-Group section of the British Triathlon website on the button below.
