Britain’s top juniors take the spotlight in Strathclyde

Published:

The iconic setting of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games is gearing up to host the next generation of triathlon stars this weekend, as part of the British Triathlon Under 20’s Festival.

The event will also stage the British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series Finale, a culmination of the six-stage series, where the 2016 winners will be crowned.

Barclay Izzard leads the Junior Men’s rankings this year and a win in Strathclyde Park would secure him the overall title. However, with Jack Willis lining up this weekend, competition will be fierce and the race will likely go all the way to the line. Will Crudgington currently lies in fourth and will look to challenge the pair.

Kate Waugh is absent on the start list this weekend, but has already successfully claimed the Junior Women’s title following three wins across the series thus far. This leaves the race for silver and bronze open for the chase, with the likes of Julie Nimmo and Emer Wintsch battling it out for the podium.

The Youth Boy’s race will see the familiar head-to-head between Matthew Willis and James Chantler-Mayne. With the pair having banked two wins each in 2016, Strathclyde will be the decider as to who tops the podium.

The Youth girls race is less clear cut, with three of the top four athletes sitting on the same amount of points going into this weekend’s race. With rankings leader Erin Wallace not starting, the path is clear for either Abbie Williams, Imogen Moroney or Libby Coleman to take charge.

Elsewhere, the event will stage the Inter Regional Championships, seeing Tri Star 2 and 3 athletes representing 13 regions across Great Britain go head-to-head in a bid for the coveted IRC title. 2015 saw the East Midlands Team take the top-spot at Leicestershire’s Mallory Park. Could this be the year for Scotland claim gold?
