British and Home Nation Championships, British Triathlon Super Series and international racing, here’s what’s coming-up this weekend…

Europe Triathlon Cup action, British and Home Nation Championships, the start of the British Triathlon Super Series and middle and long distance races across three continents… it’s a busy weekend of swim, bike, run events with the 2022 season now well and truly underway.

Here’s a guide to the weekend and what to look out for on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April… 

Europe Triathlon Cup Melilla (3 April)

After British medal success at Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira last weekend, British triathletes will be back in Europe Triathlon Cup action this Sunday when the host venue is Melilla, Spain.

Barclay Izzard – who finished 14th in Portugal last weekend – will be back on the start line in the elite men’s race, alongside Gordon Benson, Iestyn Harrett, Dominic Coy and Cameron Harris, who will all begin their seasons in Spain including a first senior international start for Coy.

Daisy Davies will also race in a senior international event for the first time in the elite women’s race, where Iona Miller will continue her season after a fourth-place finish at the opening Europe Triathlon Cup Lievin last month before a DNF in Quarteira last weekend.

British Paraduathlon Championships (3 April)

Some of Great Britain’s best paratriathletes and brightest paratriathlon talent will be competing at Sunday’s British Paraduathlon Championships – an opportunity not only to begin their year by being crowned British champion, but also the first chance to claim points in this year’s British Paratri Super Series.

Returning for the first time since 2019, the British Paraduathlon Championships will take place across the super sprint distance at Prestwold Hall in Leicestershire. Athletes will start with a 2.5km run, before a 10km bike and then a final 1.25km run to the finish line.

British Triathlon Super Series (2 & 3 April)

The 2022 British Triathlon Super Series begins this weekend featuring the best athletes within the performance pathway competing to be crowned the champion in their respective series this year.

As well as the British Paraduathlon Championships in the Paratri Super Series, over 400 Youth & Junior and Senior athletes will take part in a Performance Assessment Weekend, including a pool swim time-trial on Saturday and then a combined bike-run on Sunday.

Not only will the results from the weekend be used to allocate starts and order of entry for races in the series’, but the races will also carry points towards the overall standings.

British Triathlon Super Series

Triathlon England Standard Distance Duathlon Championships & GB Age-Group Team Qualifier (3 April)

The first Triathlon England Championships of 2022 are being held on Sunday with Yorkshire Duathlon hosting the Triathlon England Standard Distance Duathlon Championships at Croft Circuit, near Darlington.

The standard distance event, which is a 10km run, 40km bike and 5km run, offers Triathlon England members an early season opportunity to become national champion in their age group across the run, bike, run format.

Alongside the national duathlon championships, Yorkshire Duathlon is also a qualifying event for age group athletes wanting to qualify to represent the GB Age-Group Team at the 2023 European Standard Distance Duathlon Championships, however athletes must have registered their intent to qualify by 5pm today (1 April).

IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside (2 April)

Double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee will return to race action at this weekend’s IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside in California, where he will be joined by fellow British triathletes David McNamee and James Scott-Farrington in the men’s pro race.

Brownlee will compete in his first triathlon event since ankle surgery last year, while McNamee and Scott-Farrington will also take on the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run.

Lining-up in the women’s pro race from Great Britain will be 2017 race winner Holly Lawrence and Ruth Astle, who had a successful end to 2021 with two IRONMAN wins in five weeks.

IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside

IRONMAN African Championship (3 April)

Joe Skipper and Susie Cheetham will both compete at the IRONMAN African Championship on Sunday 3 April, which is held at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

There’s been a British winner in the women’s pro race over the last three editions with Ruth Astle’s win last November following Lucy Charles-Barclay’s two wins in 2018 and 2019.

This is a course where Cheetham loves to race and she returns to South Africa this weekend, along with Skipper, who has won IRONMAN events in the UK, USA and New Zealand.

Challenge Salou (3 April)

There’s also middle distance racing in Spain with a number of British triathletes on the pro men and women’s start list for Challenge Salou.

The Salou course will comprise of a 1.9km swim, 85km bike and 21km run with Lucy Byram, Emma Cowper, Tara Grosvenor, Fenella Langridge, India Lee and Rosie Weston all contesting the women’s race.

There will also be plenty of British interest in the men’s race which features Thomas Davies, Brett Halliwell, Andrew Horsfall-Turner, Kieran Lindars and Sam Wade.
