British Triathlon would like to add its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Les McDonald, the former ITU President, who passed away on Monday in Vancouver, Canada.
McDonald, who was 84 years-old and born near Newcastle on Tyne UK, is remembered as the driving force in establishing triathlon as an Olympic sport. He was ITU president from its inception in 1989 to 2008.
Former British Triathlon president and ITU vice president, Sarah Springman CBE worked closely with McDonald throughout his time at ITU.
She said: “Les McDonald was a towering figure in our sport who made an absolutely priceless contribution. He was himself was an age grouper and I first met him in Hawaii in 1987. From 1988 he was recruiting people to ITU and was the prime mover in creating games opportunities for triathletes, and ultimately set the scene for paratriathletes as well.
“He will be enormously missed, and the sport will be forever grateful to him for his drive, enthusiasm and tactical nous.”
More information is available via ITU. Rest in peace, Les, and thanks for your contribution to our sport.
