Brits back in action this weekend at Arzachena and Alhandra world cups

Published:

This weekend welcomes more rescheduled World Cup events of the 2020 season, taking British athletes to Italy and Portugal for both triathlon and paratriathlon action.

Athletes will take on the sprint distance, beginning with a 750m swim before embarking on a 20km three-lap cycle and finishing with a two-lap run that spans 5km up to the finish in the Parco Riva Azzurra.

Alistair Brownlee’s name makes up a start list of a number of familiar faces including ITU world champion, Vincent Luis (FRA) who travels to Sardinia after victory at 2020 Karlovy Vary ITU Triathlon World Cup.

Brownlee also approaches the race in fine racing form, taking part in not one but two races over the first weekend of September. Brownlee achieved a top ten finish at the 2020 Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon Series race before travelling to the Lake District the following day to take gold at Helvellyn Triathlon.

The double Olympic gold medallist isn’t Britain’s sole representative for the elite triathlon races, however, as Beth Potter will pull on the trisuit for the women’s race. Potter had a successful start to the year, taking silver at the 2020 Punta Umbria ETU Duathlon European Championships just before the suspension of activity. Potter also competed alongside Georgia Taylor-Brown and Jessica Learmonth in Hamburg recently, crossing the line in 00:56:13.

This weekend also offers up some Paratriathlon World Cup action at the 2020 Alhandra ITU Paratriathlon World Cup, with Lauren Steadman set to line up in the PTS5 category against the likes of Alisa Kolpakchy (UKR) and Monika Belczewska (POL). After taking gold at the European Championships in Valencia last year, Steadman will certainly be eager to take the tape once more.

START LIST

The PTVI category will also feature British athletes, as Rhys Jones will take on a competitive field including Spain’s Héctor Catalá Laparra and Jose Luis García Serrano. Jones beat out another Spanish rival, Rafael Cabello Sanchez, earlier this year to secure silver at the 2020 Punta Umbria ETU Duathlon European Championships. This weekend, he will take to the start line, guided by Christian Brown.
