Brits return from World Duathlon Championships in Aviles

Published:

This weekend saw elite British athletes and around 300 members of the Great Britain Age-Group Team competing in Spain at the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships.

Ben Cumberland took gold in the junior men's event in Spain, crossing the line in 00:50:23 in what was his first race at that level. Cumberland was part of a quartet of young British men in the race, with all four securing top-twenty positions. Henry James finished 10th, Skip Snelson completed the race in 13th and Liam Openshaw rounded out the top-twenty in 20th.

The elite senior men's race saw Liam Lloyd record the fastest time of the six British athletes on the start line as he finished seventh. Philip Wylie (17th), Ben Price (20th), Christopher Perham (28th), Sam Hart (33rd - 11th in U23) and Reece Ashfield (38th - 16th in U23) were also competing alongside Lloyd.

In the elite senior women's race, Olivia Mitchel secured tenth position, with Rachel Brown crossing the line 13th with Claudia Kelsall recording a DNF.

The elite senior and U23 course consisted of a first run that saw athletes race across four 2.6km laps along the banks of the Ria de Aviles before a bike leg of six 6.6km laps. The laps were focussed around the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, with the route seeing competitors navigate paths and roads around the river and centre. The final run once again took athletes along the river for two laps to reach the finish.

The junior races followed the same course but over a shorter distance of 5.1km first run, 20km bike and 2.6km second run.

In the Paratriathlon races, Adrian Howden raced in the PTS4 men's race where he came second. The event consisted of a 5.1km first run, 20km bike and 2.6km final run.

Around 300 members of the Great Britain Age-Group Team competing in Spain at the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships, with 48 team members returning with medals.

Situated in northern Spain, Aviles welcomed duathletes from around the world to compete. The event, which was originally scheduled to take place in Almere before being postponed and relocated, saw world champions crowned in both sprint and standard distance duathlon.

Taking place on Saturday 6 November, the sprint distance opened the weekend’s action. Seven British athletes claimed gold over the 5.1km run, 21.2km bike and 2.8km run, with the course taking competitors along the Ria de Aviles around the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre for all three legs.

The seven newly crowned world sprint duathlon champions from Great Britain are: Lucy Bednall (F U20), Sarah Grover (F 25-29), Marie Brush (F 40-44), Sarah Paterson (F 50-54), Chris Nicoll (M 50-54), Trish Barton (F 55-59) and Jane Holmes (F 65-69). A full roll of honour is available for all British medallists below.

Sunday 7 November saw the standard distance races take place, with further medals won by the team over the 10km run, 42km bike and 5km run.

Similarly to the sprint distance course, the athletes started by the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, with the first run taking them south along the river. The bike leg would see them follow the river north towards the coast, before turning on the Peninsula de San Juan to head back to transition and the final run.

In total, 24 Brits earned a place on the podium for the standard distance championships including 11 gold medal winners: Alex Doherty (M 30-35), Lindsey James (F 40-44), Bruce Raeside (M 40-44), Nici Cahusac (F 45-49), Lee Piercy (M45-49), Karen Murphy (F 50-54), Warren Mason (M55-59), Nora Haggart (F 65-69), Roy Flanagan (M65-69) and Elspeth Knott (F70-74). See below for a full roll of honour of all British medallists.
