Brits take on supersprint World Triathlon Championships Series Montreal and IRONMAN European Championships

Published:

Five athletes from Great Britain are set to race in Montreal in the penultimate World Triathlon Championships Series race, whilst three Brits will take on the IRONMAN racing in Frankfurt and Finland to be crowned European champion.

Groupe Copley World Triathlon Championships Series Montreal

Two events remain before the 2021 world champions are crowned and Alex Yee currently sits in top spot for the men whilst Sophie Coldwell is third in the women’s rankings as they stand.

The Groupe Copley World Triathlon Championships Series Montreal is set to deliver spectacular swim, bike, run over two days of supersprint triathlon. Athletes travelling to compete for Great Britain include Grant Sheldon for the men and Non Stanford, Olivia Mathias, Sian Rainsley and Sophie Coldwell for the women.

Stanford raced at the World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama in May this year, achieving a top ten finish after she crossed the line in 7th place. Mathias saw success in July when she travelled to the Europe Triathlon Cup Tiszaujvaros and was not only part of the winning relay team but put in a strong individual performance to take the tape in the final.

Rainsley has found great success in European racing this year, most recently coming home with gold at the 2021 Europe Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships Kitzbühel after being part of the winning mixed relay team from Great Britain accompanied by Mathias.

Coldwell reached the podium whilst racing on home soil when she took 3rd place at AJ Bell 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds in June, Grant Sheldon also featured at Leeds and will take to the start line in Montreal for the second time after initially racing in Québec’s largest city back in 2017.

With Coldwell in 3rd place behind Flora Duffy (BER) in the standings and both athletes racing in Montreal ahead of the championships final in Edmonton later this month, it is still all to play for in the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series.

An innovative new format for World Triathlon will see the first day of racing feature qualifiers and a repechage before the final races the next day. This means that competitors will be eliminated throughout the event, with the starting field of thirty athletes on Saturday reducing to just ten for each final race.

The overall winners will add 1,000 points to their series tally, with each position thereafter being awarded 7.5% than the position prior.

The individual racing will take place on 13 and 14 August before athletes will take to the course again for the mixed relay on 15 August.

IRONMAN Frankfurt

The IRONMAN European Champions will this year split the men’s and women’s races between countries as two British men, David McNamee and Thomas Davis, are set to race at the European Championships in Frankfurt.

McNamee has reached the podium at Kona twice and travels to Germany for his first full IRONMAN of the year. Davis on the other hand has had an active racing schedule in 2021, taking the tape at Eton Dorney Triathlon in June.
