Brooks and Baker lead the Age-Group medal haul at the ETU European Championships in Kitzbuhel

The Great Britain Age-Group Team collected 26 medals to add to a great weekend of European Championship success in Austria

The ETU Triathlon European Championships headed to the Austrian Tyrol town of Kitzbuhel for the second time in three years this past weekend. The Age-Group athletes were racing over the Standard distance only this time around, with the Sprint distance European medals to be decided this coming weekend in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Well known for travelling in significant numbers – over 800 in Kitzbuhel - the British team continued to be successful too. From 18 medals three years ago (and 22 at the corresponding championships last year in Lisbon), the final tally of success in 2017 was 26 – with ten of those being Gold.

For the women, Victoria Baker (30-34) was the fastest British athlete of the race on her way to winning her category. A great result for her, having missed out on Gold twelve months ago by just 39 seconds.

After recently finishing second overall in the British Age-Group Championships in Leeds, Samantha Rose (25-29) added a European Bronze to continue her strong early season form.

The British women also achieved a podium sweep in the 35-39 category, thanks to Lisa Webb, Candice Heys and Erica Booth.

The fastest British male Age-Group athlete was Donald Brooks (40-44). Like Victoria, he was the third fastest athlete overall, and his efforts earned him Gold with a winning margin of almost one and half minutes, largely thanks to a very impressive bike leg. In another parallel, Donald also steps up from having won the Silver medal last year in Lisbon.

The current British Triathlon Age-Group Athlete of the Year, Michael Smallwood, won the Silver medal in M70-74. Remarkably, that represents his 21st international podium in across ITU/ETU competition. That represent a quite remarkable record of consistency and longevity for the Rugby Triathlon Club athlete.
