Brooks and Mackenzie lead the way to European Championship success in Estonia

The British Age-Group team dominates the Tartu ETU Standard Distance European Triathlon Championships

Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, hosted the first of two European Championship events in close succession this past weekend. While the Elite athletes were competing for Sprint Distance medals – including Gold for Sophie Coldwell, for Age-Group athletes, the city would provide the venue for 2018 Standard Distance medals to be won. The roles will be reversed in a few weeks time at Strathclyde Park in Glasgow.

Despite a busy summer season, almost 300 British Age-Group athletes travelled and produced some exceptional performances, collecting a staggering total of 51 medals, 19 of which were Gold.

As well as individual category success, the team also provided the fastest athletes overall in both genders.

The fastest female athlete of the day was Alison Mackenzie (30-34) who produced the fastest bike and run in her category to take Gold. For the men, it was Donald Brooks (40-44) who set the pace. Already the European and World Champion in 2017, he retained his European title to add to his British Championship at the AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds in June.

Among the medal winners were several veterans of the Great Britain team. Michael Smallwood (Silver, 70-74) won his 25th international medal, Peggy Crome (Gold, 75-79) her 17th and Jane Bell (Silver, 60-64) her 13th podium in ITU/ETU competition.
