Brownlee and Pallant on top in Gran Canaria

Published:

Alistair Brownlee won his debut Middle Distance race at Challenge Gran Carnaria, and Emma Pallant made it a double victory for British triathletes at the hot and hilly Canary Islands race.

Brownlee established a lead from the start and eased away from the field during the 90km bike ride. He ran comfortably throughout the 13.1mile run to record a time of 4hours 03:03, which was eight minutes ahead of Pieter Heemeryck (BEL), in second place. Mark Buckingham, also making his debut over this distance, finished third.

Brownlee, who celebrates his 29th birthday tomorrow, said: “I really enjoyed the whole race, thank you everyone for the great support.”

The lead in the women’s race changed throughout the race, with Pallant coming out the strongest during the run, but only by six seconds from Lucy Charles. Daniela Ryf (SUI) was third in what appears to have been an eventful women’s race. For a more detailed report, see Tri247 report.
