Brownlee back for ITU World Triathlon Edmonton

Published:

Jonathan Brownlee hopes to put illness behind him at the ITU World Triathlon Edmonton on Saturday. Having won this race last year, Brownlee hopes to recapture the form he showed finishing second to his brother in Leeds last month. Gordon Benson and Grant Sheldon are Britain’s two other representatives.

Brownlee was ill and flew home from the last round of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Hamburg. However, he’s recovered enough to have made the trip to Edmonton.

He commented: “I was really disappointed to miss Hamburg, but I had to listen to doctors’ orders. I’m really happy to be in Edmonton and although I’m not certain how things will go, I know I’m feeling a lot better than I was!”

Brownlee has missed too many races to have a realistic chance of challenging for the world title, but there are two more rounds of the Series before the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Rotterdam. There’s also the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup in Nottingham and Super League Triathlon in Jersey, so there is plenty to target for from here.

Brownlee said: “My chances of a world title are gone now, but finishing the season well is really important to me.”

Grant Sheldon finished fourth in Edmonton last year. The cold September conditions suited the Scottish athlete, who will hope to put this season’s injuries behind him. Rio 2016 Olympian, Gordon Benson completes the British line up.

There are no British women competing in this or the next round in Montreal next weekend due to a planned altitude training block for some, and injuries to Non Stanford, Vicky Holland and Jodie Stimpson. British Triathlon Performance Director, Bendan Purcell, expects to see several British women competing in Stockholm (26-27 August) ahead of the Grand Final in September.

Remaining Series rounds:
Edmonton: 28-29 July
Montreal: 5-6 August
Stockholm: 26-27 August
