Busy weekend of middle distance racing as well as Age-Group Team Qualifiers

The events continue to ramp up throughout the summer and this weekend there’s a focus on middle distance racing with The Championship from the Challenge Family and four IRONMAN races taking place with British interest.

Closer to home, there’s also two Great Britain Age-Group Team Qualifiers for 2023 Championships including the first aquabike qualifying event of the year.

The Championship (22 May)

The fifth edition of The Championship from Challenge Family takes place on Sunday (22 May) and there could be a fifth consecutive British winner in the women’s race.

Pro athletes have had to qualify for The Championship 2022 being held in Samorin, Slovakia, with Lucy Buckingham heading into the race as defending champion after securing the race victory last week.

Buckingham is one of five British women on the start list which includes Emma Pallant-Browne and Fenella Langridge, who have both won Challenge events this year. They will be joined on the start line by fellow British triathletes Lucy Byram and India Lee.

Thomas Davis, James Teagle, Sam Wade and Will Draper will compete in the pro men’s race.

IRONMAN Lanzarotte (21 May)

It’s the full IRONMAN distance for Lydia Dant and Sam Proctor as they take part in what is the 30th edition of IRONMAN Lanzarote.

The 2.4 mile swim will take place at Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, before a one-loop 112 mile bike course around the island and then a 26.2 mile run course along Avenida de Las Playas and back to the finish line three times.

IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga (22 May)

2016 world champion Holly Lawrence is the sole British representative in the pro events at IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga which takes place on Sunday (22 May).

Lawrence has already been on the IRONMAN 70.3 podium in 2022, finishing third in California last month and will compete against a field which includes Bermuda’s Olympic champion Dame Flora Duffy.

IRONMAN 70.3 Marbella (22 May)

British triathletes competing at IRONMAN 70.3 Marbella will be hoping for a party atmosphere when they take on the course staged against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains.

Nikki Bartlett will be back in action, two weeks after completing her first IRONMAN World Championships, finishing 13th in St. George, while Chantal Sainter, Tara Grosvenor, Debbie Greig and Olivia Mitchell are also on the start list.

In the men’s pro race, George Goodwin, James Scott-Farrington and Morgan Davies are the British triathletes to look out for.

IRONMAN 70.3 Pays d’Aixen-Provence (22 May)

The south of France is the destination for Will Munday as he lines-up on the start line at IRONMAN 70.3 Pays d’Aixen-Provence.

Munday completed his first IRONMAN 70.3 in Mallorca two weeks ago and will be back competing again, this time over a course that will take athletes through villages, mountain vistas and forests around the city of Aix-en-Provence.
