Champions crowned in a decisive weekend of swim, bike, run

In-between the Olympic and Paralympic action in Tokyo, the world of swim, bike, run continued to provide entertainment of the highest level at the World Triathlon Championship Finals and U23 World Championships in Edmonton along with long distance and middle distance racing.

World Triathlon Championship Finals Edmonton

The 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series came to its conclusion over the weekend as Alex Yee followed up his gold and silver medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by finishing the series with an overall bronze. Sophie Coldwell was Great Britain’s highest placed female, securing fifth in the overall series standings.

Edmonton also hosted the U23 World Championships in which young British athletes, Olivia Mathias, Sophie Alden, Kate Waugh and Sophia Green raced for the women and Cameron Main and Connor Bentley for the men. Olivia Mathias and Sophie Alden were the highest finishing Brits, crossing the finish line in 6th and 7th place respectively.

IRONMAN Copenhagen

Travelling to the Danish capital, Elliot Smales was Britain’s sole representative in battling through a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and final 42.2km run through a variety of Danish settings including countryside, city centres and the coastline.

In a race that was dominated by Australia’s Cameron Wurf, recording a course record as he took the top spot on the podium, Smales’ race resulted in a DNF.

British Middle Distance Triathlon Championships and Triathlon Scotland Middle Distance Triathlon Championships Aberfeldy

Aberfeldy, the Scottish market town in Highland Perthshire, was yet again selected for the British and Scottish Championships and delivered thrilling age group racing once more. With athletes taking on a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km run, this year’s champions were crowned over the weekend as the event celebrated its 24th year.
