Ten British athletes will take to the course in Madrid for the 2023 Europe Triathlon Championships on Sunday 4 June.
Kate Waugh and Olivia Mathias will both start the women’s race amongst the top, wearing numbers five and eight respectively. Waugh, the reigning U23 World Champion, recorded her best World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) result in Yokohama in May.
Mathias ended 2022 with a World Cup podium in Miyazaki before starting this season with silver at Super League Arena Games Sursee.
The pair will be joined on the start line by Sian Rainsley, Sophie Alden and Daisy Davies. All three finished in the top-ten at Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle a few weeks ago, with Rainsley placing second, Alden seventh, and Davies tenth.
The women’s race will be the first to get underway at 11:15 in Madrid (10:15 BST), with the British quintet up against the likes of Lisa Tersch (GER) and Maya Kingma (NED, who have both recorded top-ten WTCS results in the last month, and Annika Koch (GER) who finished second to Waugh at the U23 World Championships last year.
Five Brits will also race in the men’s race, which gets underway at 13:30 local time (12:30 BST) following the women’s race. Jonny Brownlee, Jack Willis, Ben Dijkstra, Dan Dixon and Max Stapley will all don the GB trisuit, with the latter doing so for the first time.
Brownlee will be racing a week after competing at WTCS Cagliari, whilst Willis and Dixon will be looking to improve on results from the European Championships in Munich last year where they finished 24th and 48th respectively.
Matching Rainsley’s result from Caorle, Dijkstra also finished second in Italy in the middle of May at the Europe Triathlon Cup.
Both races will be available to watch on TriathlonLive.tv on Sunday and will round off the weekend’s action, which will also include elite paratriathlon on Saturday and Age-Group racing throughout the weekend.
