Chantler Mayne made the best start of the three British athletes. The 17 year old from Wiltshire only found two days ago that he could get on the start line today, but he got into a small lead group on the bike and headed across the iconic bridge and into town with Dijkstra and Izzard behind with the next small group of cyclists.

The second transition saw athletes slipping and falling in the wet conditions, but Chantler Mayne got through safely and powered into fourth place early into the 5km run. At halfway Dijkstra had moved through the field to seventh place and Loughborough University student, Izzard was just behind.

At the finish, Australian Matt Hauser grabbed the world title ahead of Vasco Vilaca (POR) and Dijkstra took the bronze thanks to a very strong run. Chantler Mayne was just behind him in fourth and Izzard ran brilliantly well to claim sixth place.

Dijkstra said: “I wanted to improve on last year but to equal that, I’m over the moon. We can all go back to the hotel, warm up and be happy. This shows the strength in depth with Great Britain triathlon.”
