Double delight at Stockton Duathlon Festival

Published:

Stockton Duathlon Festival took place last weekend on Sunday 27 April providing duathletes with two opportunities to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team, including the last chance to qualify for the ITU Standard Distance Duathlon World Championships in Spain.

A busy day of racing saw duathletes compete in both sprint and standard events on fully closed roads with a multi-lap format, which made for exciting racing despite the rain, with the run sections along the riverside taking in the Tees Barrage, the Millennium Bridge and the Infinity Bridge.

The overall winner of the standard distance was Paul Brown (35-39) who completed the 10km run, 40km bike and 5km run in a time of 01:52.43. Alex Lawton (25-29) finished close behind the winner completing the course in 01:53.47. In third place overall was David Thomas (35-39), with a time of 01:54.18.

It was a dead heat for the women’s standard distance race with both Suzie Richards (25-29) and Eleanor Haresign (35-39) completing the race in a time of 02:03.49 and being awarded joint first place. Emma Holt (25-29) put in two very strong runs to come home in third place crossing the line in 02:05.52.

There was also the opportunity to guarantee a place on the team for the 2015 ETU Sprint Distance Duathlon European Championships, with Adam Labbett (25-29) completing the 5km run, 20km bike and 2.5km run in a time of 01:01.18 to win the men’s sprint race overall. Mark Flannery (40-44) finished less than minute behind completing the course in 01:01.53 to take second place. In third place overall was Garry Walker (35-39), with a time of 01:02.30.

Bronwen Owen (U20) stormed to victory in the women’s sprint race after running the fastest run splits of the day completing the race in 01:07.24. Robyn Waugh (U20) finished a close second place in a time of 01:09.42. Pauline Munro (45-49) finished in third place overall crossing the line in 01:12.17.

For duathletes who missed the chance to qualify for the 2015 ETU Sprint Distance Duathlon European Championships at Stockton, there are two additional chances to qualify later in the year at Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon (5 October) and Althorp Duathlon (18 October).
