Edward Castro completes a Golden double in Australia

Published:

The British Age-Group team added a further eight medals to their collection on Sunday at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Gold Coast.

The 2018 Standard Distance Triathlon World Championship featured on the final day of competition in Australia.

A Gold medallist on Thursday in, quite appropriately, a sprint finish, Edward Castro capped a fine 2018 season by adding Standard distance Gold to his victory over the Sprint distance on Sunday. In the process, he was also the fastest British Age-Group athlete across all divisions and second only to Todd Buckingham (USA) overall. Using his impressive swimming skills, Castro was once again first out of the water and then also first off the bike, before defending his advantage on the run to take the win by 39 seconds.

The second fastest British athlete overall, Owain Matthews, was also a Gold medallist, his victory coming in the 35-39 category, where a fourth best bike split and fastest run were key to his result.

The third of the British Gold medallists was Sarah Barrett (F70-74) who maintained a fine run of success at this championship. That was her third consecutive World Championship Gold medal, having also won in Cozumel (2016) and Rotterdam (2017), to add to a C.V. which also includes previous success in Hamburg (2007) and London (2013), alongside a further two Silver and two Bronze medals between 2009 and 2012.

Having earned Gold on Thursday, both Penny Rother (F60-64) and Peggy Crome (F75-79) returned to the podium on Sunday, but this time to collect Silver medals to add their impressive medal collections as long-standing members of the British Age-Group team.

While it didn’t result in Age-Group medals, the fastest British female overall was Christabel Shaw (F30-34), as Rachel Wiseman (F35-39) recorded the fastest run split by any female over the distance, with both finishing fifth in their respective category.

Across the Sprint and Standard distance Age-Group World Championship events, the British squad will return home with a total of 20 medals: 10 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze.
