World Triathlon introduced a new format to the Championship Series over the weekend with a number of British athletes taking part in Montreal in the same weekend that David McNamee took bronze at the IRONMAN European Championships.

Groupe Copley World Triathlon Championship Series Montreal

On Friday, Sophie Coldwell, Non Stanford, Olivia Mathias, Sian Rainsley and Grant Sheldon lined up for the first ever World Triathlon Eliminator race. This two-day event saw qualifiers and repechage races take place on Friday and the finals on Saturday, with all the action being over the supersprint distance.

The first of two qualifiers in the women’s racing saw Non Stanford and Olivia Mathias line up for Great Britain alongside Olympic champion Flora Duffy. The top ten from each qualifier would reach the final and both Stanford (3rd) and Mathias (8th) made it through alongside the likes of Duffy and Americans Taylor Knibb and Katie Zaferes.

The second qualifier saw Coldwell and Rainsley reach Saturday’s final in 5th and 7th respectively, with Germany’s Laura Lindemann crossing the line first in a very tight finish. Nine of the ten qualifiers crossed the line within six seconds of each other.

Grant Sheldon missed out on qualifying by five seconds however his 11th-place finish saw him race again in the repechage. This second shot at reaching the finals would qualify another ten men, however, finishing in 16th, Sheldon was unable to secure a British place in the men’s finals.

Saturday’s finals saw three supersprint races take place with a short break in the middle. The bottom ten finishers from the first two race were eliminated to leave a top-ten shoot out in the final one.

In the first race, Mathias was eliminated in a quick race that saw her finish within a minute of the race winner. The second round saw Rainsley narrowly miss out on the top-ten to see her eliminated in 13th place.

Heading into the final, Coldwell and Stanford had consistently been the quickest of the Brits in a weekend of racing that had been dominated by Duffy (BER) and Knibb, Zaferes and Taylor Spivey (all USA).

The final round was no different with Duffy topping the podium ahead of Knibb and Spivey, with Zaferes in 4th. Having left the water first, Coldwell finished ahead of her compatriot in 7th with Stanford crossing the line 10th.

A third day of racing took place on Sunday without any British involvement as the USA took gold ahead of New Zealand and Italy in the mixed relay.
