Elite Gold for Nicole Walters and Sam Dickinson in Ibiza

Published:

A busy week of ‘Cross’ and Aquathlon racing at the inaugural ETU Multisport European Championships Festival

Tuesday – Cross Duathlon

Jim Mcconnel (45-49) and Kim Baptista (18-19) lead the way for the British squad in the Age-Group race, earning Bronze and Gold medals respectively in their categories, with Kim setting the second fastest female Age-Group time overall of the day. The top British Elite athlete was Nicole Walters (sixth), though she would certainly be looking for better in her preferred swim/bike/run format two days later in the Cross Triathlon.

Wednesday – Aquathlon

Having won U23 Silver at the World Championships this year, Samuel Dickinson added European Aquathlon Gold in Ibiza. Third across the line, that meant double success with the Elite Bronze medal too. It was an U23 one-two for Great Britain, as Nathan Tweedie (fourth overall) joined Sam on the podium.

A medallist at this championship for the past four years, Hannah Kitchen put aside a recent road traffic collision to finish in fourth this year, while Chloe Pollard was also fourth in the U23 event.

The Age-Group team were out in large numbers, with the British women in particular dominating at the top of the table. Tina Wilson (40-44 – Gold) was the fastest overall female, while Michael Lewis (20-24 – Silver) was the third fastest male Age-Group athlete. They were part of a squad that collected 37 medals, including 15 Gold.

Thursday – Cross Triathlon

Second this year at the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships in Denmark, Nicole Walters took the final step up to become European Cross Triathlon Champion on Thursday. She used her bike strength to pull away from a small group that exited the swim together, and then held strong on the run to take the Elite Gold medal.

The 10 British Age-Group medals included a Cross Duathlon / Triathlon double for Nicola Dick (F55-59 – Gold in both), and Colin Hunt (M65-69 – Silver in both)
