Eton Dorney to host ITU Paratriathlon World Cup & Development Event

Published:

Great Britain will host a round of the ITU Paratriathlon World Cup at Eton Dorney, west of London, on Monday 28 May. The event will feature many of the world’s best paratriathletes as well as providing an essential development opportunity for aspiring triathletes and paratriathletes who are keen to try the sport.

Elite paratriathletes from around the world will compete in the fourth of eight rounds of the ITU Paratriathlon World Cup. Athletes including Britain’s Rio Paralympic Champion, Andy Lewis MBE, are targeting big performances on home soil. Lewis hopes to defend his ITU world title on the Gold Coast in September, and he is amongst those leading the call for people to try the sport through the Arctic One Tri & Para-Tri Festival, which takes place on the same day.

Entries to the event have opened today (Friday 12 January) and athletes from age eleven are invited to try both triathlon and paratriathlon in the safe, flat and traffic free environment of Eton Dorney. There are open races up to the sprint distance, which is the recognised international and Paralympic distance and will suit athletes with some experience of triathlon or endurance sport. All entry fees will go towards the staging of the event and to charity, Arctic One, for any future charitable activity, plus paratriathlon equipment and participation opportunities.

Open wave distances:
Super Duper Sprint: 200m swim /5km bike / 1.5km run (age 11+)
Super Sprint: 400m swim/10km bike/2.5km run (age 15+)
Sprint: 750m swim/20km bike/5km run (age 15+)

Andy Salmon, British Triathlon CEO, said: “We look forward to welcoming some of the world’s best paratriathletes, including Paralympic heroes, to British soil for an exciting showcase for the sport.”

He added: “The event kick-starts two weeks of international triathlon and paratriathlon events across Great Britain, and we hope to inspire even more participation in a sport that caters for all.”

ITU President and IOC Member, Marisol Casado, said: "For me it is an honour to welcome the best paratriathletes in the world here to Eton Dorney for the Paratriathlon World Cup. I have to say that I am extremely proud of the work done in the city, the organising committee and British Triathlon to support the sport of paratriathlon from grassroots through to elite; allowing participants to enjoy the thrill of competition whatever their level in the sport.”
