European success for paratriathlon team in 2012

Britain won four golds in a seven medal-haul at the 2012 ETU European Championships in Eilat, Israel.

Ian Dawson overcame a year of injury, equipment failure and crashes during 2011 to regain the TRI-6 (visually impaired) title he won in 2010. Leading from start to finish, Dawson recorded the fastest swim and bike legs as he won by over a minute from Filipovic of Serbia.

After the race, Dawson said: “I had such a shocking season from start to finish after such a great year in 2010, but we had a well planned and executed race today.

“It was my guide, Luke Watson’s, first paratriathlon as a guide, so he’s done brilliantly.”

In the women’s TRI-6 race, it was a head-to-head battle between Melissa Reid and Charlotte Ellis. Reid led throughout the race, however it was Ellis who took the gold medal ahead of her compatriot, catching and passing her in the final 100m.

On winning gold, Ellis said: “We’ve done a huge PB (personal best) today in tough conditions and the fields get stronger every year, Melissa is a fantastic athlete, so we’re delighted.”

Faye McClelland continued her consistent run at the top of the sport. The TRI-4 athlete, who was born without a left hand, was delighted to claim her third European title in a row ahead of two strong Russian athletes.

McClelland showed her dominance to cross the line 12 minutes ahead of Anna Bychkova in second.

The TRI-1 (wheelchair) category brought gold, silver and bronze for the Great Britain team in 2012.

Jane Egan continued her fine run of international success with another gold, whilst Jimmy Goddard and Joe Townsend battled for medals in the men’s event.

On his international debut, Townsend set a blistering pace on the bike and chased Goddard all the way to the finish.

In an exciting close race, Goddard and Townsend were always close in the race for silver with Goddard claiming it to see Townsend settle for the bronze. The race was won by Spain’s Francesc Garcia.

Steven Judge was Britain’s final medallist with silver in the TRI-3 category. Despite setting the fastest run split of the race, Judge was unable to chase down the lead established by Italy’s Michele Ferrarin.
