Final Team Scotland triathlon selections confirmed for Birmingham 2022

The final Commonwealth Games triathlon selections for Scotland have been confirmed with Sophia Green, Cameron Main and Grant Sheldon joining the already selected Beth Potter and paratriathlete Alison Peasgood in Birmingham next month.

Sheldon will represent Scotland for the third successive Commonwealth Games having also competed in both individual triathlon and the mixed relay at both Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018.

Birmingham will be a first Commonwealth Games for both Green and Main, who have both had podium finishes at Europe Triathlon Cup events, including victory for Green in Coimbra, Portugal last year.

Speaking to Triathlon Scotland about his selection, Main said: “Back in 2014 I got the opportunity to be a small part of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Since then, I have dreamed of being part of Team Scotland, and now I have the opportunity to do this on the 29th and 31st of July in Sutton Park. I want to thank everyone who has been part of this journey since I started triathlon back in 2012”.

Today’s announcement, which also confirmed Hamish Reilly and Iona Miller as reserves, follows the previous confirmation that Beth Potter would represent Scotland at her third Commonwealth Games and Alison Peasgood had been selected for PTVI paratriathlon’s Commonwealth Games debut.

The selection marks 50 days to go until the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the milestone was also marked by Wales, who announced their selection of Dominic Coy, Iestyn Harrett, Olivia Mathias, Issy Morris and Non Stanford.

Rhys Jones had previously been announced as competing in the men’s PTVI, guided by Rhys James.

Dave Ellis (guided by Luke Pollard), Oscar Kelly (guided by Charlie Harding), Katie Crowhurst and Melissa Reid were the latest Team England athletes to be announced, following Jonny Brownlee, Sophie Coldwell, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee’s selection earlier in the year.

Triathlon will be the first medal event at Birmingham 2022, with the individual triathlon events taking place in Sutton Park on Friday 29 July and the mixed relay and PTVI paratriathlon two days later on Sunday 31 July.
