Focus on home and abroad as athletes compete in world, continental and national events

Whether you’ll be staying up late or getting up early to watch the World Triathlon Championship Series and World Triathlon Para Series double-header in Yokohama, here's a guide to a busy weekend of swim, bike, run.

World Triathlon Championship Series and World Triathlon Para Series Yokohama (14 May)

Following British success at the Arena Games Triathlon World Championship Series, the World Triathlon Championship Series gets back underway in Japan this weekend as Yokohama hosts a triathlon and paratriathlon double-header.

Beth Potter, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Sian Rainsley will compete in the women’s race at what is the third event of this year’s World Triathlon Championship Series, but the first of the calendar year.

Alex Yee and Grant Sheldon will line-up in the men’s race in Yokohama which will get underway at 05:16 (UK Time) on Saturday morning, following the women’s race at 02:16 (UK Time).

In the World Triathlon Para Series, which will start just before midnight on Friday evening, George Peasgood is the sole Brit on the start list and returns to Japan having won two medals at last year’s Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle (14 May)

As well as the racing in Yokohama, there will also be British interest at Europe Triathlon Cup Caorle in Italy this weekend.

In the elite men’s race, Tom Bishop, Sam Dickinson and Barclay Izzard will be back on a Europe Triathlon Cup start line having all been in action in Quarteira, Portugal in March, with Izzard following-up his 14th place with silver at Europe Triathlon Cup Melilla a week later.

Sophie Alden also competed in Quarteira, finishing seventh, and will be looking to add to her streak of top-10 finishes, including two podiums, at continental cup events when she competes in the elite women’s race in Caorle on Saturday.

British Triathlon Super Series – Llanelli (14 May)

Llanelli is ready for an action-packed day of swim, bike, run racing on Saturday (14 May) when the South Wales coastal town welcomes athletes from the British Triathlon Youth & Junior, Senior and Paratri Super Series’.

Bringing together Great Britain’s best pathway athletes and future talent, the British Triathlon Super Series is a multi-event series of competitive racing and development opportunities throughout the year.

Athletes will be competing for British Triathlon Super Series points, with the racing in Llanelli also including an extra reward for junior and U23 athletes who will be competing to represent Great Britain at international championships this summer.

Welsh Triathlon Super Series (15 May)

It’s a weekend of swim, bike, run in Llanelli with the town’s North Dock hosting the first stage of the Welsh Triathlon Super Series, which returns for its fourth year.

A similar format to the British Triathlon Super Series, the Welsh Triathlon Super Series is a multi-event series, comprising of televised sprint and standard triathlon events throughout the year.

Llanelli is the first of six events in 2022 which will see Welsh club and age group athletes go head-to-head across all age categories. The Llanelli Multisport Festival will also include the Welsh Club Triathlon Relay Championships.

Eton Sprints - 2023 European Championship Sprint Triathlon qualifier (15 May)

Age group athletes wanting to represent the Great Britain Age-Group at the 2023 European Sprint Triathlon Championships will have the chance to qualify at Human Race’s Eton Sprints event on Sunday (15 May).

The event, hosted as part of the Eton Sprints Weekend at Dorney Lake, is one of a number of qualifying events being held this year for athletes to qualify for 2023 World and European Championships. A full list can be found here.

The event this weekend includes a 750m swim in Dorney Lake, a multi-lap bike leg around the lake and then a loop for the run along the lake path to finish.

Athletes must register their intent to qualify for the 2023 Championships by 5pm on the Friday before the qualifying race, as well as entering the qualifying race itself.
