GO TRI programme supporting individuals with Parkinson’s in Nottingham

The eight-week-programme of swim, bike, run activities is being run for a local group of people with Parkinson’s in Nottingham to help them be active.

According to the NHS, Parkinson’s affects around 1 in 500 people and is where parts of the brain become progressively damaged by the loss of nerve cells, leading to symptoms including involuntary shaking, slow movement and loss of balance.

Taking place in Victoria Leisure Centre from 4 February and working with Trent Bridge Parkinson’s Cafe, the programme will be designed to support and assist the individuals to be active with the aim of them continuing to exercise beyond the eight weeks.

GO TRI is British Triathlon’s entry-level programme designed to help get people active through swim, bike and run. Each session will comprise of swim, bike, run activities to develop fitness, movement and strength, concluding with an informal multisport event at the end of the eight weeks.

This eight-week-programme, organised by East Midlands Regional Manager Sarah Williams with funding from British Triathlon, will be delivered by Whole Health Fitness who currently work with the group to run adapted swim sessions. Each week participants will take part in coached swim training, indoor cycling session and outdoor run/walk.

Parkinson’s UK encourages sufferers to take part in exercise appropriate to their symptoms. Exercise helps with physical and mental symptoms of the disease and the charity says that, according to research, 2.5hours of exercise per week can slow the progression of symptoms.
