Great Britain Age-Group competition offers all Home Nation members a unique opportunity to qualify for and compete at International level in triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, winter and cross triathlon. Athletes who make the Team can be proud to represent Great Britain and enjoy the experience of racing at an International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championship or European Triathlon Union (ETU) European Championship. Meet Yiannis, who has taken part in several Age-Group Championships.

Name: Yiannis Christodoulou
Club: Adalta CC
Role: Age-Group Triathlete

When and how did you get into triathlon?
I got inspired by the 2012 London Olympic Games. I watched the triathlon race and thought it looked hard but fun. I didn’t know anything about Triathlon and I was lazy back then, hardly doing any exercise, so that’s what got me into running and led me down this road. I raced in a few triathlons the following year but I kept getting injured the first couple of years and nearly gave up.  A few years later I went injury free for a longer period of time and moved onto aquathlons as at the time I didn’t have time to train for all disciplines due to getting married and buying a house.

When was the first time you qualified for the GB Age-Group Team?
My first time was in 2016 for the 2016 European Aquathlon Championships in Chateauroux which was a memorable event as I came 3rd in my Age-Group.

What did you feel when you found out you had qualified?
When the email came I was shaking to start off with and had to read the email a few times. I then phoned my wife and parents to tell them what had happened. I was very happy and proud.

What is the best thing about being able to represent the GB Age-Group Team?
Being part of a team and meeting other athletes in an environment where you are able to help others and make friends. I was very lucky to be selected as the Aquathlon Team Captain for the World Championships in Penticton this year. This is something I was very proud of! I’m happy to give something back by helping others.

Do you have a specific goal for the future?
I always like to aim high and be the best I can. I aim for podium places at Age-Group level. I am getting back on the bike to do triathlons again this year!

What’s your top tip for those who are new to Age-Group triathlon?
Enjoy every moment, don’t get nervous or panic - everyone is friendly and helpful. You get to share the same interest with others and make friends, just don’t be afraid to talk to others.
