Inaugural British Triathlon Championships weekend announced in Liverpool

Published:

British Triathlon is delighted to announce the 2013 British Triathlon Championships Liverpool on 13 and 14 July 2013.

This new event concept has been created following recommendations from the 2011 British Triathlon Competition Review, which cited the need to raise the game of British Championships across all participant categories to make them aspirational events for people to take part in.

British Triathlon has worked hard to develop a single weekend event where elite, paratriathlon and age-group athletes can join together over one festival weekend to race for British Championship medals.

Additionally in 2013, the British Age-Group Standard Distance Triathlon Championships will also act as the final qualification race for athletes across Great Britain looking to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team, which will compete in London as part of the World Triathlon Grand Final London in September.

The event, which will take place over the weekend of 13 and 14 July 2013, is expected to attract thousands of athletes competing for the following British Championships:

  • British Elite Sprint Triathlon Championships
  • British Youth & Junior Triathlon Championships
  • British Paratriathlon Championships
  • British Age-Group Standard Distance Triathlon Championships, incorporating the final ITU Standard Distance Age-Group Triathlon World Championships qualification event for the Great Britain Age-Group Team

British Triathlon has also committed to provide Home Nation Members priority access to the event, ensuring those who wish to attempt to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team for the ITU Standard Distance Age-Group Triathlon World Championships in London have the maximum opportunity to do so. All entry details will be announced next month with Home Nation members receiving advance notice of the entry process via email and an exclusive entry period before the event is opened up to non member entry.

Ian Braid, British Triathlon Director for Major and National Events said: “The 2013 British Triathlon Championships in Liverpool is an exciting new event concept for British Triathlon that has been created following the 2011 British Triathlon Competition Review.  Our aim is to create a world-class stage that will deliver a fantastic weekend of Championship racing, raising the profile of the sport while offering a unique experience to elite, age-group and novice participants.  The inclusion of the final age-group qualification race for London will ensure the inaugural event has something for all and will be an outstanding weekend festival of triathlon.”

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “I’m delighted that Liverpool is hosting the first British Triathlon Championships. It’s a major coup for our city and further cements our reputation for staging major, high-profile events.

“We’re looking forward to thousands of athletes from all over the country arriving in Liverpool for what will be one of the highlights of our sporting calendar. I am sure that the event will be a major success and will create real excitement in the city.”

Robert Püstow, Managing Director of Upsolut Sports UK said:

“2012 has been an incredibly successful year for triathlon in the UK but 2013 promises to be even more of a landmark year for the sport. This is the ultimate lifestyle sport that embodies wellbeing and empowerment. With the World Triathlon Grand Final London and the British Triathlon Festival in Liverpool we will stage the two highest profile events in the country. There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in triathlon.”

The event is being organised by British Triathlon in partnership with Upsolut Sports UK with the support of Liverpool City Council.
