It’s not just medals that sparkle for Cameron Main

As well as being part of the Triathlon Scotland Development Squad, Cameron Main is also the chairman of Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation, a charity supporting children with cancer around the UK and their families.

The foundation was set up following the death of Main’s younger sister, Abbie, on Christmas Day 2017 and provides gifts and grants to children battling cancer, with Main fitting in training and competing for Great Britain alongside the work he does for the charity.

“Abbie lived for over four years with Sarcoma, which is a rare type of cancer that can affect any part of the body,” Main said.

“She passed away on Christmas Day, which was her favourite time of year, and one of the things she wanted us to do was set up a charity to help other children.”

In celebration of Abbie’s 18th birthday on 15 October, the charity are organising a month-long challenge that anyone can get involved with and fundraise for by clocking up as many miles as possible during the month.

“Our Miles to the Moon Challenge will run from 1-31 October and everyone is invited to take on the challenge,” commented Main. “It’s free to for anyone to sign up and help us raise awareness and fundraise by completing their miles by swim, bike, run or however they chose to move.”

As a cheer athlete, Abbie’s life was full of sparkle and it is in sharing this through various opportunities that the charity aims to support the children and their families.

“We give gifts and grants we call Sparkles,” Main added. “It’s all about giving families the chance to make special memories and help put a smile on the child’s face.

“In the almost three years since the charity was set up we’ve been able to provide over 370 Sparkles to children living with cancer across the UK and to provide these Sparkles we organise a series of fundraising events each year however, like most charities, we have had these postponed or cancelled due to Covid-19.

“The Miles to the Moon Challenge will be a great opportunity for us to raise vital funds for the work we do, as well as create a great community of support for children with cancer in the UK as we try and complete the 238,855 miles between us and the moon.”
