Liverpool see a stunning show from Paratriathletes ahead of Paralympic debut

Published:

Paratriathletes took to the waters at 7am, all vying for the top spot to put their marker in the sand ahead of the sports debut as a Paralympic sport in Rio in September.

ParalympicsGB representatives were out in good numbers, to make the most of the last opportunity to experience the support of home crowd ahead of the Games.

As well as showcasing some of Britain’s best the event was also an opportunity for first time paratriathletes and rising stars of the sport to take to the stage, earning vital race experience which can often be limited. British Championship titles were on the line, with medals in many categories closely contested.

First to cross the line in the men’s PT1 category was Rio-bound Joe Townsend, who was looking to try a few new race techniques before the Games. Speaking after the race Joe said “It was great to have a good warmup before heading out to Rio. I wanted to practice a few things, test out my power so I know in my head what I’m going to aim for in Rio. The course was fantastic and the water was nice and warm which made for a great event.”

Other impressive performances came from George Peasgood winning the PT4 category, and Dave Ellis taking the championship title in the PT5 category.

I had exactly the sort of race I was hoping to have today.

In the women’s field, it was a gun to tape victory for PT4 category athlete Lauren Steadman, who will take a lot of confidence from today after crashing out of the world championships in Rotterdam a few weeks ago. On her performance Lauren said “I had exactly the sort of race I was hoping to have today. I wanted to get good confidence and post some good splits in a few weeks before Rio. I’ve still got a little bit of work to do, there’s a little bit of speed to come through but after today everything is on track.”

Also scooping British paratriathlon titles were Lizzy Tench in the PT1 category and Cassie Cava in the PT3 category, both of whom will be ones to watch in the future.

The first ever Paralympic triathlon races take place on 10 September (men’s race), and 11 Septmebr (women’s race).
