Lucky Seven in Schluchsee for European Cross Triathletes

Published:

The Great Britain Age-Group Team picked up three gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the ETU Cross Triathlon European Championships last weekend, held in the Black Forest region of Germany.

A successful championship saw the team make big improvements on their two-strong medal haul from 2014.

Clocking the quickest time by a British age-grouper, Guy Evans crossed the line in 2:57:33 to earn him the M45-49 silver medal behind Gerald Will (AUT) in 2:47:56. Evans’ time was good enough to place him 20th male overall.

Marie Meldrum took the fastest British female honours, posting a swift 3:31:54 to win the W40-44 and finish 12th female overall.

Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager, Marc Preece, commented: "The weather pre-race day was mid 30's with no clouds and little wind; yet the race day conditions couldn't have been any different!  Whilst the temperature was almost perfect; the actual conditions in the swim, bike and run had dramatically changed. Just prior to the race there was a heavy down pour and the winds picked up.

"Despite the conditions, the achievement of the team was outstanding and I, as the Team Manager, was exceptionally proud to witness the medal tally. This has been out best year, but I still feel we will do better against other nations when the sports attracts more athletes. Our next race is the ITU Cross Champs in Sardina, again a tough course but with amazing scenery."

Great Britain’s elite competitors also took the stage in Schluchsee, with James Anderson finishing fourth in the junior men’s race with 1:29:10. The junior course was half the distance of both age-groupers and senior elite’s, Anderson completing a 750m swim, 15km mountain bike and 5km run.

Louise Fox narrowly missing out on a spot in the top-10 in the women’s elite race, finishing one second adrift in 3:08:08 to finish in 11th place.
