No Tokyo, no problem: mixed relay

Published:

With the Tokyo Olympics postponed until 2021, here’s something to keep you busy today - the day when mixed relay was due to make it’s Olympic debut.

For each of the three days that triathlon would have taken place in Tokyo this summer, we’re bringing you an Olympic, triathlon and Japanese themed piece activity to help make up for the racing being postponed until next year.

Olympic

In 2017, the IOC announced that mixed relay triathlon would be added to the Olympic calendar in Tokyo, giving nations a third chance to secure an Olympic triathlon medal.

Last year, at the triathlon test event for the Games, two men and two women from 21 countries lined up in Tokyo to battle it out.

With the British team amongst the front swim, bike and runners throughout, it came down to a photo finish between Alex Yee and Dorian Coninx of France. The Frenchman just edged ahead on the line to give France the gold and silver for Yee, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Gordon Benson and Jess Learmonth.

RECAP THE ACTION

Triathlon

The mixed relay test event race came down to a sprint finish in Tokyo, however, when you’re not racing the route you run is up to you.

Ahead of your next run, plan a route on Strava that creates a message or piece of artwork as you run. When you get back, see your creation and share it with us on social media - @Brittri.

Make sure your picture is sensible and ‘decent’ and you remain within government guidelines when out on your run. Not sure how to build your own route on Strava, see their website here.

Japan

Mixed relay is the shortest format of triathlon and Japan is famous for haiku, a short form of poem made up of seventeen syllables. Just like triathlon is three disciplines of swim, bike and run to make one sport; haiku is three lines of five syllables, seven syllables, five syllables to make one poem.

Below is a guide to haiku, with a bit of background and help on writing one. Try and write a triathlon-themed poem and share it with us on social media - @Brittri.
