One year to Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

With the Olympics in full swing, today (28 July) marks one year until the Commonwealth Games take place in Birmingham.

Nineteen sports will take place at venues across Birmingham and the West Midlands, with triathlon taking place at Sutton Park in two days of racing.

At the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, where paratriathlon debuted at the Games, Team England won two gold and two silver medals, with Marc Austin claiming bronze for Team Scotland in the men’s individual race.

Birmingham will see triathlon take place on the first day of sporting action on Friday 29 July 2022 at Sutton Park, with the second day of swim, bike, run two days later as Commonwealth nations compete in men’s and women’s individual triathlon, men’s and women’s PTVI paratriathlon and triathlon mixed relay.

For the first time, there will be more medal events for women than men across the Games, with PTVI paratriathlon part of a fully integrated para-sport programme.

When the Games take place next year, it will have been ten years since London 2012 and seven since the Commonwealth Games last took place in Britain, in Scotland in 2014.

To celebrate the one year to go mark, Birmingham 2022 have organised a sporting festival in Centenary Square to allow people to try some of the sports, meet Perry the mascot of the Games and find out more about the Games.

There’s also the chance to meet Team England athletes and watch them demonstrate the 12 sports on show. They’re also taking part in question and answer sessions, providing a real insight into how they are preparing for the Commonwealth Games.

The public ballot for tickets opens in September, with a specific ballot for residents of the West Midlands currently open and closing at 4pm on Friday 30 July 2021.  For ticketing information, please click here.

Opportunities to volunteer at the Games are open for applications, with organisers looking for over 13,000 volunteers to fill a variety of roles. For more information, please click here.
