Over 100,000 people energised their start to the new year as British Triathlon and Volvo UK teamed-up for the British Triathlon and Volvo Recharge Challenge to encourage people to begin 2022 by being active.

Giving participants the chance to power up their new year fitness, the British Triathlon and Volvo Recharge Challenge saw participants having to complete a minimum of 15 minutes of activity across five days from 3-9 January to earn the Recharge Challenge Strava badge.

In total, 57,399 of the 107,404 participants earned the five-day streak of 15 minutes of activity. 610,000 hours of activity were accumulated collectively, an average of 5.7 hours per participant, across over half a million individual activities (565,958).

A total of 9,037,919 kilometres were covered across the challenge which is the equivalent of travelling around the earth’s circumference over 225 times or over 11 trips to the moon and back with each participant covering 62.4 kilometres on average.

Whether it was reconnecting with nature on a family cycle ride to forming part of training towards 2022 goals, the challenge included participants taking part in activity across all levels and activities, including through swim, bike, run. Running was the most popular activity and accounted for over a quarter (26.58%) of activities completed.

Participants who completed the challenge were eligible to receive a £5 British Triathlon merchandise gift voucher, along with entry into a prize draw to win exclusive prizes from Volvo Car UK and British Triathlon. The prize draw includes a three-month Care by Volvo C40 Recharge pure electric car subscription and more information on the C40 Recharge pure electric can be found here.

Helen Marney, Director of Development at British Triathlon, said: “It was fantastic to see over 100,000 people start the new year by taking part in the British Triathlon and Volvo Recharge Challenge.

“The New Year always represents a great opportunity for many people to embed more physical activity into their lives and of course, the benefits of a more active lifestyle are well-documented. I’m delighted that so many people have taken the opportunity to sign-up and energise their start to the year through committing to 15 minutes of daily physical activity, many specifically through swim, bike and run.

“I very much hope we’ll see participants continue with their activity routines well into 2022 and perhaps seek ways they can further enjoy swim, bike, run as we work to develop and deliver more opportunities around the Country and make 2022 a truly exciting year for all.”

Georgina Williams, Head of Brandspace at Volvo Car UK, said: “At Volvo Car UK we know how important it is to recharge your mind and body by getting active. It is brilliant to see so many people taking part in our challenge and get outdoors to exercise.

“Like safety, sustainability is incredibly important to us as we transition to become an all-electric business by 2030. This activity has really helped raise awareness of our new C40 Recharge, our first vehicle that is only available as pure-electric, and our Care by Volvo subscription service.”
